Chapter 2: Page 37
Not much to talk about this week! Progress on the book continues and I’m hoping we’ll have some positive news about that soon. The plan is to get it sent out to the publisher within the next couple weeks, and then spend the interim period focusing on the non-book materials we’ll need for the conventions (prints, stickers, the table banner, etc). The book, along with any extras we produce, will be made available here on the website shortly after Boston Comic Con in early-to-mid August
Also, if any of our readers are attending PAX East this year, I will be wandering around the show floor tomorrow without too much of a plan in place. I’ll most likely be wearing a UCONN hoodie (CT represent!) so if you see me, feel free to say hi!
This guy really changes expressions a lot, doesn’t he?
I really like seeing your thumbnail sketches on these as well. Really cool to see how this comic comes together.

>Have you, now?
That can go wrong in so many ways….I hope the protagonists keep their mouths shut.
Hahaha panel 5 is the best. Looks like he just received the best present. Like fresh jerky or an Ermehn head or something.
This is a good game.
Let’s see…
“That art deco tea service is positively darling!”
“I see you, last Ferrero Rocher!”
“Downton Abbey Christmas special? Goody!”
“You found Waldo? Smashing!”
“–and they actually came back alive only missing a few limbs!”
“So! Who wants to play Apples To Apples?”
“You think you can succeed; that’s darling!”
Oh dear me, much excellent.
“You must attend our Canid Ermehn Gala. It’s to die for.”
“Where’s the baby? There he is!”
“And then they made me a meme!”
FLAWLESS.
holy shit, this is brilliant!
“Brilliant AND dairy free!”
“You didn’t bring any Vulpin with you? Fantastic!”
“So, did you like the Avengers?”
“Can I interest you gentlemen in a few drinks? We also have a lot of chocolate that we need to get rid of because, well, none of us can eat it.”
Compare Clovis here to Janik’s “So!” face back in the tavern scene.
I love it how Clovis has a different expression in each panel. The effect is subtle, I didn’t pay it any attention at first, but the page really makes his personality feel very mercurial and only afterwards I realized why – well done!
It is also fun to compare the expression in the sketch and in the final version. The sketch Clovis seems a bit more intense but also less trustworthy, for example, and trying to pinpoint why is interesting exercise.
Wow, talk about mood swings!
!
The canid recruit has just received a +2 enthusiasm bonus as can clearly be seen in panel 2.
Great page!
Clovis definitely has some sort of multiple personality disorder or something… He changes moods quicker, and more frequently, than most people change clothes. In this series of panels alone there’s like five different Clovises … or is it Clovisi? (hehehe, I kid of course) This is in no means criticism – it just really adds to his character, or rather makes up his character!
I love the expressions of the trio in the second last frame, especially Quin and his “Kenosh-are-you-sure-you-want-to-bring-that-up-now-did-you-not-see-what-he-just-did-to-that-training-dummie” look.
Great work and can’t wait until next week’s update!
Cheers,
FT
And here we have the mystical, magical, mood-changing Cloooovis! Who seems to regard Dakkan like unimportant spare meat until he mentions he’s Kenosh’s son. Great. But I can hear “if you’re happy and you know it” playing in the fifth panel and it’s immensely entertaining to me.
So forgive me if this is terribly uncouth and rude to do in this comments section, but I wanted to take a moment to tout the Redwall Survivor forums. It’s running a survival contest right now, and I know from previous experiences Redwall survivor contests are awesome, and it seems like the sort of thing that might be down some of your alleys, too. The basic concept is 9 writers create and collaborate on a story, with the audience voting out a writer every week until only 3 remain. Right now, they’re accepting applications for a steampunk, Bioshock-esque survivor story, and I think it looks amazing. So in case any of you are interested in participating or reading along, here’s the link: http://redwallsurvivor.com/forums/index.php
Alex and Rachel, if this is something you’d rather not have in the comments, I completely understand, in which case, please feel free to remove it. I’m just excited about it, and it seems like something everyone over here might like, too.
Hmmm, I wonder what HE knows about it…the way he reacted seems like it was a surprise to him.
lol gotta love Clovis’s sudden enthusiasms.
Am I just going crazy or did you change the word balloon in the first panel slightly? Nevertheless I like the design!
It matches a couple used in the last page. It signifies more intense lines.
