The Scholar and the Seawal: Page 4
IT WAS THE BIRDS! It was them all along. If only birds didn’t exist, then the lutren wouldn’t have needed to eat them all. And thus ends the lesson.
Not really, though. But some lutren sure do believe it! Creation myths are culturally essential to societies like theirs, especially in a time when “science” isn’t really a thing. Maybe the lutren will figure out their evolutionary track someday, many many hundreds of years in the future, but until then: it was the sea, because the birds.
Also, that feather dress is mighty impressive. It seems that fashion fell out of style, probably with the introduction of cloth and shark leather, but still! It’s a unique look!
I actually don’t have much more to add this week! But hey, if you’re a fan of the work I did on the world-building in Armello, there’s a new novella out in-game that you can pick up for free in Skeeve’s Shop!
See you all next week!
Having just finished my semester and taken a mythology course, I can confirm that a lot of cultures had crazy rationale for the existence of a lot of things. Funny thing is, the story here is tame compared to most real world creation myths.
Although the thing that I find interesting is that they don’t seem to have a deity in this world — not even a personification of nature.
Isn’t Tesque (the mythical figure, not the martial art) considered at least a quasi-diety by the Tamian?
I thought Tesque was part of a pantheon . . .
Tame to put it mildly. The closest analogue myth I can think off is very gory.
Also, the Ermehn having a pantheon and mild ancestor worship.
The Lutren have a henotheistic view of the sea, and the Tamians have their folk hero. Just hints for now, but religions in this world are a thing.
What kind of artwork was this inspired by? Medieval gothic?
I think the land and the sea count as personifications here, at least the way it sounds to me. (And don’t the Lutren believe the ocean is divine? Coulda sworn I saw something about that in the concept art — a kid Dakan throwing rocks into it? I’m not sure if it’s considered sacred, or actually a god itself, like how the Ganges is.)
Yes sea gods, that Kratos can kill or he can kill all the birds. I know I had to kill all the birds in the new game. However I digress, finally the armello novellas are out, hope that includes those audio books that League of Geeks was working on. I will make sure to pick them up in a few years when it comes to console (still waiting on rivals and I’m more salty than the Lutren’s sea when it comes to LOGs updates to Armello on console).
Any way now that my saltiness has crashed the salt market back to this page here.
I like this bit of world building, its important for a culture to rationalize its place in he world. Now if they would come over here to Ohio and do glorious battle against the Canada geese that infest my native state, I would be happy.
Lastly hope everyone here who is in college finished their semesters strong!
Might I just say that, besides loving this intriguing side-story overall, it makes me ridiculously happy that you used the name Nora for that Lutren gal. It’s a beautiful name but used so rarely these days, even in writing. :)
“Creation myths are culturally essential to societies like theirs, especially in a time when “science” isn’t really a thing. Maybe the lutren will figure out their evolutionary track someday, many many hundreds of years in the future, but until then: it was the sea, because the birds.”
….But….. *gets misty-eyed* Tesque is stil real, right?
*Tears flow freely*
…..Right?
