Chapter 2: Page 6
It seems our trio has been waylaid by a secondary trio – this one a bit more dastardly! As I’ve mentioned before, bandit attacks along the poorly-protected roads between the kingdoms is commonplace – perhaps Quin and Dak should have been paying closer attention to their surroundings!
Not a whole lot else to say about the page, really!
In other news, I am in the early stages of planning for another limited self-published print of a Beyond the Western Deep book that I will be bringing to New York Comic Con this October to shop around. The book would comprise all of Chapter 1, which Rachel and I are also planning on doing some edits to in the coming weeks to better prepare it for pitching. It’s still too early to offer a price or a timeline for it, but if there’s enough general interest in it, I wouldn’t be adverse to printing up some extra ones to sell to folks on the site.
If you’re interested, give a shout-out in the comments section so we can see!
…something tells me Kenosh is going to be displeased when he wakes up. Very displeased. Or that Dakkan’s feelings about blood are going to bubble to the surface, no pun intended.
For a moment, I believed that the first bandit was a Canid, and seeing the Ermehn entourage, I did a double take. But the pointy ears and body markings gave it away, so hello there, Felis. You’re a bit far north.
Here’s to hoping no one gets skewered, at any rate!
Also, forgot to mention that I would totally buy that Chapter 1 book.
It may be too early to say for sure but I’m going to assume that Kenosh feeling displeased is his ground state of being.
He doesn’t seem like the kind of person to suffer fools gladly, or put up with too much tomfoolery, or tolerate warmongering, or have any truck with self serving ‘politics’, or stand by while injustice is being done, or easily forgive incompetence…
I bet he would hate people constantly checking their mobile phones. Good thing no one’s invented them yet.
No, I think that’s spot on. “Displeasure” is his automatic default. But now he’s going to have lots of extra heapings of displeasure on top of his displeasure, along with some anger.
Kenosh is *the* older guy who gives door-to-door salesmen the look that implies they should be melting into the ground, and like you said, the one who hates mobile phone checking with a vengeance. Or medieval times, would that be scroll checking? Hmm.
I wonder why the felis bothers to cover his face, when his buddies the she-ermehn and gangsta ermehn don’t feel it’s necessary. Maybe he’s just ugly?
Also, I think today all involved learned a lesson about importance of surprising your victims with your weapons drawn. Giving them a fair fighting chance goes against the entire point of highway robbery, really.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a superiority thing, or if the dude runs some inn or merchant shop further up in Aisling. “You got robbed by bandits? How awful! Come stay in my inn!”
Rule 1 of Highway Robbery: When you are in taunting range of your victims, your sword should also be in taunting range of their throat. Because if they have their weapons drawn already, they’re going to execute the latter part of the rule before you do.
Hopefully the protagonists are paranoid enough!
Yeah, I’m not sure Dakkan yelling a battle cry as he charged was the sharpest idea – a defensive move might have worked better if it had come more by surprise. On the other paw, at least it should wake up Kenosh … and why do I have the feeling he might be able to clean up all three of these bandits without any help from the young ‘uns?
The masked dude looks like a rejected “Batman” villain. Not that I’m complaining – it’s actually kinda cool. But still …
And as for the Promo Comic, well, Teeds, I was begging you for a copy of the *last* one, so what makes you think I wouldn’t be all over this one too? Bring it on!
Huh, looks like all three of them are Ermehn…
The masked one is likely a Felis, the one with the sword is an Ermehn, and the last one looks like either a Tamian or an Ermehn.
The last one’s an Ermehn. A really, really smug Ermehn.
well…. there goes dakkan… *facepalm* so much for being calm and thinking out the situation… but thats why i luv dakkan….he makes every situation something to remember!
I don’t know about you guys, but that Ermehn on the left in the first panel looks a lot like Red from the old Website Blog.. (http://fourkingdoms.blogspot.co.nz/2010/03/deltrada-cover.html)
Also, I’ll definitely be down for that Promo comic :D
That’s interesting. I can’t quite see whether or not his bandanna has eye holes al la Zorro but you may well be onto something.
He’s what Rachel refers to as a “spiritual successor” – but they’re not the same character. The old “Red” character isn’t even in this current incarnation of the script – wow, nostalgia :)
As for his mask, he doesn’t have eye holes per se, but it does wrap around twice, giving him a little bit of a view of the battlefield.
Go to it Dakkan, lad, subtlety is for fools!
Punch that guy RIGHT IN HIS FAAAAAAACE!
I’d definitely would be interested in a print version of BtWD, but do you have plans of shipping overseas?
Because this isn’t an “official” printing and I’d be handling it myself, I’m okay with factoring overseas shipping costs into the price on a case-by-case basis :)
I swear that I have nothing to do with this and the Inquisition has never taken me in.
I deny everything, you hear me? Everything!
Nor am I the drones you’re looking for. Well, mistakes all around.
I’d definately be interested in buying a printed version. I bet this comic looks awesome on paper. Also, go Dakkan! But it wasn’t very smart of them to put up that fire, was it? Bandits can see them from miles away.
We get to see our bandits in this page… rather suddenly, I must say. I dunno – for some reason, them standing around our heroes like that and making their demands… it comes across as a rather quick jump from the situation in the last page. In fact, the events here seem to move quite quickly overall – from some brief demands by the bandit leader to Dakkan jumping up to attack them and the Ermehn raising her sword. Not that it’s a bad thing if a scene moves quickly, but somehow I feel like an extra page might’ve allowed the scene to flow more naturally.
However, the bandits themselves look really cool. We get a Felis leader with a mask hiding his face, an Ermehn who looks surprisingly like Red from the old version (man, that character seemed so cool… What happened to him?) and an… Ermehn female? When I first read this comic, I completely missed that one of the bandits was a woman. It wasn’t until a few pages had passed that I gathered her gender. I guess one clue should’ve been the small chest covering she’s wearing. Which, btw, goes right where her… glands should be. Makes me wonder… Anyway, she looks totally badass!
Let’s see how the situation evolves. I gather Kenosh won’t be pleased when he enters the fray…
I think you’re dwelling a bit too much on the chest wraps, heheh.
