Chapter 3: Page 17
Wow, Quin’s really laying it on thick for Tosch, there! The canid general really doesn’t appreciate that level of sass — but Dakkan sure does! Apparently Quin burned Tosch so hard that it snapped Dak out of his punch-induced nap! That’s not really what happened, but I’m sure at this point Dak appreciates seeing the canid general being taken out for a walk.
Rachel’s been wrestling with Comcast for the last week or so following her move, which is all one really does with Comcast these days I suppose. That’s why the WIP pic looks a little weird — it was snapped via cell phone camera from a computer screen! We all wish for a speedy return of high speed internet to Chez Bennett!
Also, one quick point of order — last week, Avatune mentioned that a bunch of pages in Chapter 2 had been left in their incomplete state here on the website! I couldn’t believe it, until I went back and… sure enough, a whole bunch of pages were still WIP! I went back through Chapter 2 last weekend and replaced all the unfinished pages in Chapter 2, so now we should be up to speed there. Thanks again for letting me know, Avatune!
This week for guest art, we got an email from Nathan Harrison, who you might remember did some AMAZING Hardin cosplay last year. I’ll let him explain it in his own words:
“I seem to remember you saying, in one of your past posts, that you love to see re-imaginings of your characters. That inspired me to draw Hardin as a Scottish chief of the destitute McSratha clan. The idea came quite naturally since the plight of the Ermehn is very similar to that of the MacGregors in Scotland and, more obviously, Hardin wears a kilt. I hope you like it.”
And like it we do, Nathan! Hardin McSratha looks very much in character charging into battle, and the attention to detail with the regalia is fascinating. Thank you so much for this totally awesome reimagining of Hardin! :D
Excuses Tosch? I dont think even your brother would like to hear you say things like that.
I’m definitely loving Quinlan controlling the situation as much as he’s able and I’m happy to see Dakkan is slowly awakening.
Anyway I didnt realize Rachel moved as well (and I was wondering where did all the nice little thumbnail updates go for the last few weeks). Here’s wishing everything goes back to normal on your end.
and oh man Hardin is totally rocking out that attire! Awesome work Nathan!
MMMMMMMMM what’cha saaaay…….
you go, Quin! keep roasting that guy! and it’s good to know Dakkan’s recovering! I love the guest art! it’s nice to see Hardin in Scottish regalia! and for once, he’s actually wearing a shirt! XD
Have you seen “Siri Plays Splatoon” on YouTube, by chance? “MMMMMM what’cha saaaaayyyyy…..” always makes me laugh. :P
Yes I’m glad Dakkan seems to be alright. At least, alright enough to laugh in the face of Tosch haha.
Wow, Quin’s really been pushed to the breaking point here! Something tells me that Quinlan’s scouts are every bit as good at tracking as Tosch’s, if not, yknow, better. Quinlan isn’t doing half bad for having been unconscious only a few pages ago. As in, Quin pretty much has control of the situation here- as much as he can, because Tosch has been effectively derailed from his point and is going to Quin’s level. While it lasts, it is very satisfying to see Quinlan with as much power as he can have in this case. Tosch is still the one with the sword and the dead brother, and given how much Quinlan and Dakkan care about each other, all it would take is a sword jabbed in the right place to get Quin to shut up. I can’t help but wonder how this exchange would go with Clovis as the interrogator- I doubt he’d let Quinlan derail him so easily.
In Tosch’s defense (I know, I know) his brother did just get stabbed in the back, literally and figuratively. It’s almost a shame Clovis didn’t survive because the mental image of him breaking out the Adele and Taylor Swift breakup playlists is amusing. Also, Quin is probably underestimating the Sratha-din and Kenosh just a bit. (Is Kenosh going to start wearing plaid again? His emissary robe isn’t exactly fitting anymore)
I love that challenging but not too sassy look on Quinlan’s face in the first panel. The expressions and blocking here are spot on, Rachel.
Ahh, I noticed the pages too but I just assumed it was on the to-do list. Excellent page this week.
I like this new, more assertive Quinlan too! He has been bit of a wet rag until now, and it’s nice to see him starting to throw his weight around – like he should.
I suspect you’re joking, and if you are just ignore the rest of this comment.
I don’t entirely agree with that ‘wet rag’ comment. Quinlan’s in a totally new position that he hasn’t really been trained for- scouts are supposed to be all about stealth and being unseen, while the Captain is a very public role. That said, Quinlan has tried repeatedly to assert himself- when he tried to protest the whole Deltrada mess in the first place, when stood up for Dakkan after Clovis roasted him, and that’s not even counting the whole ‘beating up Crim’ incident- but out of those two times, he’s been upstaged by Kenosh. Also not to mention that during the Crim incident he was able to pull Dakkan back when he started to get upset about Crim being a dirty cheater. That’s also not to say Quin is a brazen, Janik-esque debator who’s been thwarted by circumstance- he is naturally timid and nervous. But he’s also not a push over.
I see what you’re saying, but in a way I think Quinlan was a bit of a pushover initially in the sense that he just backed down whenever anyone else stepped over him. But now that his back is (somewhat literally) against the wall, he doesn’t have the luxury of just letting things go.
As we can see here, Quin was never an idiot, just timid and unsure of himself. But as we saw with Crim, when push came to shove he stepped up and proved his potential. I think we’re going to see the same thing happen here with Tosch
You are getting a little defensive there, Tosch. :P You’re loosing lots of cool points.
The argument tables have turned, at least for the moment . . . It’s nice to see Quin getting a few licks in on Tosch, I’m guessing it’s the most victory he’ll be tasting for quite some time now.
It’s also nice to see Dakkan beginning to come to, I’ve been missing his voice. He hasn’t had a line of dialogue since August 5th, 2015, and he was pretty broken then. It’s definitely a good sign to see him laughing again, hopefully he’ll return to his usual self and won’t become a bitter shell after seeing his friend get hurt, buckets of blood, and his father murder someone, break an alliance, betray his kingdom, and abandon him . . . yeah. Best not to repeat the list to him, he’s going to need some time to himself.
Tosch is starting to get flustered! This is good. Or at least entertaining from our perspective. But we also need to remember that they’re his prisoners, and he’s more or less holding all the cards right now. Best not push your luck too far, you two.
McGregor o’ the hielan clan ye left five sons and no a man
Your motley crew dae a’ they can tae terrorize the border
Yeah, tell a TAMIAN that you can’t track something. That’ll go over well.
I have a nasty feeling that the Canid might force Quin to track Kenosh and the Sratha-Din at Dak’s expense…
