Chapter 3: Page 35
That’s quite a tumble! I wonder if the canid could market this as a ride of some kind? You know, aside from the fact it tosses you around like a ragdoll and isn’t conducive to things like “breathing air” or “getting out alive”?
It’s like a way more extreme version of the Crocodile Mile ride you could put in your backyard. You remember Crocodile Mile, right? It was like a more extreme version of a Slip ‘N Slide! Whereas the Slip ‘N Slide was just “slide across this long mat”, the Crocodile Mile had like, water spritzers, a body-board, and a crocodile mouth you flew through! It was a weird message to send to kids, I think: if you see a crocodile, try to jump into its mouth!

Man, the 90’s were weird.
Anyway, I wanted to share some wonderful guest art this week from a new contributor! Amelia M sent us this fun image of Quin and Dak in happier times, which will hopefully balance out their more recent ‘serious’ shenanigans. Check it out!
I loooove love love the vibrant colors and the really fun scene! Dak is absolutely a giver of noogies, especially when it comes to Quinlan. His head is eminently noogie-able, as I’m sure Crim and Janik discovered as well. Actually, hold on a second, I think this is proven out in another piece that Jerome did a while back! Lemme go through the archives here and…
Aha! PROOF that Quin’s head is the most noogie-able in all of Western Deep! There are two pictures of it happening, it MUST be true!
“I wonder if the canid could market this as a ride of some kind? You know, aside from the fact it tosses you around like a ragdoll and isn’t conducive to things like “breathing air” or “getting out alive”?” I don’t know about anyone else, but I see Clovis or perhaps Lady Canid scoffing at that statement and saying, “Safety is for pups.”
No sign of Dakkan in this whatsoever. Bloody Lutren’s probably halfway down the pipe at this point with his swimming skills, leaving Quin to choke on his spray trail. Typical.
Poor Quin can’t even catch a break in the guest art. He’s just the punching bag of the universe.
nice page! I *really* hope Quin could at least doggie paddle his way to safety. poor Quin… he just wants a quiet life, and the plot isn’t giving him any of it…
and a Deltrada water park… hmm…
Alex! if this comic gets popular enough, have a Western Deep theme park built! have a really big water slide called the ‘Deltrada Death Trap’ be the main attraction! buuuut….. the issue would be in making the thing **survivable**… let’s hope there won’t be any PR nightmares for that one…
someone come up with a brochure for this place! please!!
Oh no, “Deltrada Death Trap” is super catchy name but it a lose-lose situation.
If it kills someone, Alex and Rachel get charged with murder.
And if it doesn’t, Alex and Rachel get sued for false advertisement!
I’m sure Dak is going to show up last minute get him around to swim out of this mess.
I do love the lovely art Amelia made! Oh Quin he’s going to be the butt of the jokes in this comic isnt he.
I foresee mouth-to-mouth resuscitation…
:D
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Crim appeared at the last second, gave him a noogie, and then banished into the night.
“You damned fool!”
You guys were GOING TO KILL THEM. It would have been more foolish NOT to escape.
I know, right? It reminds me of the first panel of this:
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0795.html
In a surprising twist, the dungeons and implied threats were truly as hospitable as Tosch is capable of being, and this leads to the nasty sewers.
long time no see! how you doing?
Yeah, sorry. I wish I had more to contribute here. Been pretty good though. How are you?
It’s ok-I’m glad you’re alright.
Not bad at all.
While I otherwise like the composition on this page, I have to admit that the first panel looks better in sketch than the in final version. Initial Quin is wide-eyed, about to panic and cast in a dramatic shadow, while now he’s just squinting as if to say “ew, this water is wet” :T
I think that’s more a reaction to getting slammed against the wall- he’s involuntary squinting in pain. Especially with his shoulder.
I agree, when you’re in water and can’t swim very well, you’re not likely gonna have your eyes wide open.
Between the thumbnail and final, I decided that Quin flinging his injured arm out like that should visibly hurt him more. It might need some massaging later, but it’ll do for now.
Wow I failed my depth perception check
And this is the page where we only see Quin’s anatomy in bits and pieces at a time.
1st panel: Head and arm.
2nd panel: Head and shoulder.
3rd panel: Leg and tail.
4th panel: Head CU.
Did I mention that I really like this page?
Quin will likely survive this escape, but the true question is: will the arrow?
I already said this last page. Gonna repeat. Visual storytelling is top notch here. I really like the panel layout and how it leads the eye in a sort of ‘tumbling’ motion.
I wondered about that. Given the fact that it’s his only arrow, my guess is yes, but I’ve been wrong before.
I definitely think it’s going to be used for a single unlikely plot-critical shot before he has a chance to get any more.
If I’m right, I’m going to start calling Chekov’s Guns in fantasy Quinlan’s Arrows.
Oh man. This does not look fun for Quin. That slam into the wall has to have hurt his shoulder, too. Rachel the way you express pain with the mottled hot colors is really effective.
I love the way the entire page is composed here and how one panel flows into another. I am interested in finding out why the canid calls Quinlan a fool. Maybe a grate, as others have suggested? Although, given the fact that it’s very rivery it just might be pike after all.
I also have to say I quite enjoy the way her cape flares out dramatically even though there’s no wind. I bet that’s a skill Clovis trained into all his recruits. After all, Presentation is what separates soldiers from super soldiers, if you’ll excuse the megamind reference.
The way the sound of the water builds across the bottom of the page is also very effective.
That’s lovely guest art! Nice eye for detail in remembering Quin’s scout uniform!
Ha, I’m sure the noogies Crim gives Quin aren’t very affectionate. Although I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in seeing their dynamic when they were younger. And I’m sure Dakkan has friends back in Lutra besides Quin. However, it says a lot that Dakkan considers Quin his best friend even though they see each other a few times a year at best and Dakkan’s not the best at writing letters back.
One last note: that expression in the second panel is priceless. Sorry Quin, the universe (Alex) isn’t done punching you yet.
Well from that one flashback scene, I’d say Crim just beat Quin at Tesque all the time. (Hence why he was annoyed that Quin was chosen to replace Caldus, not him.)
There may well be a breeze coming up from the water tunnel to affect her cape.
That being said, I’m sure her cape would be fluttering if she were locked in Quin and Dak’s cell. It does just fit Clovis’s style.
Actually, are we sure that this isn’t one of Tosch’s soldiers? I binged the archive through the battle and I didn’t see hide nor hair of this particular Canid. Or, for that matter, Wolf-Feyn. Which would make perfect sense if they’re part of Tosch’s division of reinforcements and missed the action.
That being said, Clovis probably cajoled his brother into teaching his troops the same dramatic flair.
Well hey there, Shieldmaiden – long time no see! :D Haven’t seen you around since the Redwall Wiki days.
Have to agree with you on all points.
You might as well rename this chapter, “Quin’s Horrible No-Good Very Bad Day”
Also I love the guest art, and agree Quin needs more noogies!
It could be worse, though. At least Quin himself wasn’t tortured, and he did manage to get them out of the cell. And they’re still on the escape now, even if it’s not in the safest or most pleasant way…
Best title for this chapter, by default.
Well that’s two swear words in a row. We have a new record, folks! Thus showing how in trouble they are.
But to look on the bright side, at least the guards aren’t chasing them! Though it’s because they don’t want to go over the waterfall themselves. And they hopefully aren’t going to send some guards down to find them at the bottom – but again because they think they’re going to die. Oh well.
(posting this in two parts because the comment was too long)
At least Quin was spared the psychological pain of being forced to jump into the water when he *knew* that it led to a terrifying waterfall. I mean, look at how he acted the previous page when he didn’t even know about the waterfall yet! Just imagine what he would’ve said if he’d known!
I wonder if Dak thought this was an awesome water ride while Quin is experiencing it as a nightmare water slide (or waterfall, and without a boat in either case). I wonder if Quin will get aquaphobia from this. Or maybe he’ll decide to learn to swim after all because it’s clearly a useful skill? Speaking of that when we were rereading last week’s page my sister pointed out that Quin might not have been about to say that he can’t swim *at all*, but just that he can’t swim with his arm injured like that, which is something I don’t think anyone considered yet?
Actually on second thought could they both see the waterfall before they went in? Is that why Quin swore and (partly why) Dak didn’t look too happy?
Let’s just hope there aren’t some bars or a grate or something at the end of that tunnel.
Dakkan notices the grate at the last second and grabs onto it, only for Quinlan to come in headfirst and *WHONG*.
Would be about par for the course for our Tamian.
Where is the full image of Jerome’s artwork? I’m not sure if I’ve seen it before…
I am so glad I’m always late to the party when it comes to good series, because I don’t have to wait for updates – but now that I’m caught up I will nonetheless gladly endure the wait for the next part. Excellent comic!
The story behind each panel is also awesome to see – it’s a pretty intensive process at times.
Welcome to the Salmon Party! :D
Yes, welcome to the group! Enjoy your time here.
So THAT’s what that means. xD Thanks for the greetings!
Wow, hey Neil! Long time no see! I hope you’re doing well. It’s good to see you again, especially here!
I know, right? I’ve been doing alright – lots of drawing and Youtube, and working overnight at a supermarket: kinda just figuring out where to start the next chapter. How about you?
And yeah, this is a nostalgic setting for sure.
Kinda the same- currently teaching English to kids and non native speakers while I try to figure out my next move. Internet access here is kinda limited- but we should catch up when I get back to the states!
That drawing has paid off, too!
That sounds interesting – I’m studying German right now. Definitely should catch up sometime!
And thanks! I want to start doing comics and illustrations and such soon. x)
I absolutely love the way Rachel represents pain with the colors
