Chapter 3: Page 41
THEY DON’T KNOW!?
Man, the awkwardness here, it’s just crazy! We’ve all been there, right? You’re just trying to have an ordinary conversation, you ask a very simple question like, for example: “When you killed that guy last night, what did you mean by ‘you were supposed to wait?'” We’ve ALL been there.
This is going to be a relatively short post, since I’m about to head out to see the remake of IT (one of my favorite horror books), but I wanted to remind everyone that the Western Deep Discord (aka the ACTUAL Salmon Party!) is alive and well right here, and you’re free to join and chat with us!
For guest art this week, a really special piece from the incredible Nolan Markey, composer extraordinaire who wrote a trio of wonderful music inspired by the world of the Western Deep. His most recent piece was entitled “Slip Jig,” and was meant to convey a fun little duet between Quinlan and Dakkan at the Land’s End Tavern (doubly immortalized in this piece by Jerome Jacinto)
Well, Nolan is at it again!
He’s actually re-recorded the Slip Jig piece with ACTUAL instruments! The penny whistle and strings are now 100% real and thusly making the piece 1000% more awesome!
Thank you SO SO SO much, Nolan! This piece was incredible beforehand, and with the added real instruments, it sounds even closer to that elusive “so real you’d think you were actually there” threshold!
Enjoy everyone, and see you next week (or sooner, in the Discord!) :)
Oh no! Someone forgot to say their parts of the script! The grumpiness is overwhelming!!
Anyways, I love the reworked Slip Jig! And that piece Jerome made us never ceases to amaze me!
Ahah oh wow and just when I thought it couldn’t get any more awkward in that boat!
The calm water and sunrise make a good contrast against the mood of the characters. Yet, in a more philosophical way, the warm tones almost seem prophetic, like the heat level is rising along with some tempers.
I love when my friends say my presence is a mistake and glare at me, and then I find out that that important thing I told them last night was never heeded, and could have resulted in the death of my child and his friend.
Nolan, I love the music – it really puts life into the illustration! It would be awesome to hear more of this.
I’m guessing only Hardin and Ashtor knew about Kenosh’s involvement. But that makes me wonder, we know Kenosh was captured during the Oram revolution, so we can surmise that’s when he first made contact with the Ermehn. But then he was let go for some reason, but we don’t know why. If we guess that Hardin is around Dak and Quin’s age, he’d have been only a child when Kenosh left, so when did Kenosh get in cahoots with Hardin? Unless…
Ooh new theory! Hardin is related to Oram, the guy who led the last revolution, which would explain why Hardin has a strong sense of Ermehn pride and revolutionary spirit, and would connect him with Kenosh, since he was presumably in Oram’s camp after his capture!
It’s been proposed before that Kenosh got involved with the Ermehn when he was captured and met Hardin there, but I don’t believe it’s ever been suggested that Hardin is related to Oran. That would explain a lot; we’ll have to see if it’s true.
I’m pretty sure it’s been established that Hardin is about five years older than Quin and Dak, so if they were kids when it happened he would have probably been in his early teens. Which is warrior age for an Ermehn . . .
What’s the awkwardness level?

(I had to. I hope you understand.)
I also hope Rhosyn understands what she just stepped into. Though obviously she doesn’t. Forget I said anything.
I must admit I’m very interested to see next week’s page. I’ve been wondering what Kenosh meant by that remark for over a year now, and we’re finally going to get to learn the truth.
I’m excited to see what Kenosh is about to set loose, too. Poor Rhosyn just asked a question; and I think she’s having second thoughts about it in the last panel. XD
Kenosh has been stewing even more than usual since the attack. I’m dying to find out why.
I wasn’t expecting this. :0 Is Hardin actually hiding something from the rest of Sratha-din, too? This doesn’t bode well for Kenosh or Hardin. :S I sense an emotional explosion coming on.
I suspect Ashtor already knows. We’ve already seen Hardin confide privately in him. But if Rhosyn doesn’t know I don’t see how Rathik or Bevan would. Eira is iffy as Ashtor’s protege. But certainly if half the Sratha-Din doesn’t know the other Ermehn don’t. Hardin’s been hiding a lot of something from someone.
Huh, I can’t find the link properly to the Discord.
Not sure what happened there! Updated the link — try this within the next 24 hours: https://discord.gg/X25c97
Oh, I just listened to the new Slip Jig. It’s even better! I wish I could figure out how to download it . . . my computer doesn’t seem to want to.
Hi all! Slip Jig can be downloaded here: https://soundcloud.com/8va/slip-jig
Hit “more”, then “download” should be in the dropdown menu.
Cheers!
Got it. Thanks.
Man can Kenosh not even go two seconds without engaging in angry otter syndrome from now on? Not that I mind since it’s pretty much where he’s at his best lol.
Nolan you are seriously amazing with these musical pieces!
Nice to see Ashtor speaking up.
Interesting, though not terribly surprising, that Hardin didn’t keep his group informed about what was going on. (It’d be a bit hypocritical of Kenosh to complain about that, but I hope he does anyway.) Or maybe Hardin just lied to Kenosh. Either way.
It makes the rest of the group seem a good deal less heartless than they did when we were seeing things (mostly) from Quin and Dak’s perspective. (Whether they would actually have done anything different if they’d been in the know and whether you could blame them if they didn’t are questions I’ll cheerfully ignore for the present.) At least it looks like Kenosh might not be so angry at the group as a whole, even if he’s now twice as mad at Hardin.
I guess Hardin has enough faith in his ability to inspire loyalty (i.e. he’s really full of himself) that he’s not worried about upsetting Kenosh enough to lose his support. However, I get the impression Kenosh is a lot less likely to tow the party line in spite of misgivings than, say, Ashtor. I mean, we saw what happened last time Kenosh had a disagreement with an ally.
what a great song
