Chapter 3: Page 70
Aaaand we’re back! Of course, the Kickstarter continues–it’s been a wild and crazy 10 days, but we’re currently sitting at $11,111 (I know! It’s weird!) and have been selected as one of Kickstarter’s official “Projects We Love”. You can check out the Kickstarter by clicking on this link or the image below!
Both of those things are great news to us, but there’s no time to relax! We’ve got another $4,889 to earn before October 5th to get this campaign across the finish line! If you’re on the fence or have questions about the book, feel free to drop a question here or on the Kickstarter website, and I’ll answer it ASAP.
I love these action sequences where Rachel plays around with our standard suite of panel shapes, creating sharp, angled lines and interesting silhouettes that really lend to that “lots of things happening in a very short time frame” feeling you should have in a multi-character fight. You might recall a similar technique used in Chapter 2 in the fleeting moments after Clovis’ death, or the unique shapes we saw in the Quinlan/Crim fight in Chapter 1. It’s always cool to see it, and I think Rachel’s work here is wonderful.
We’re going to be posting an update to the Kickstarter campaign on Monday with some new information for interested potential pledgers, but if you’re interested in snagging a hardcover edition of Beyond the Western Deep: Volume One, complete with EXTRAS of all sorts, we highly encourage you to check out the campaign website: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2036424072/beyond-the-western-deep-volume-one
ALSO! As you might know, I’m a writer on the MMORPG Guild Wars 2! A major project of mine over the last few months has been the upcoming raid that will be released next week on Tuesday, September 18th. Here’s the teaser: https://twitter.com/GuildWars2/status/1040631362124836869
ladiiiies and gennnnnntlemen! Yoooung and oooold! Welcome once again to the Colosseum of Combat! the Bastion of Battle! the Home of Harm! nowhere else but the Cenolau-Municipal-Stableyard-and-Coach-Houuuuse!!!
For your edification and without further ado it’s my pleasure to introduce this year’s Multirace, Mixed Gender, All Weight Class, Any Weapon, No Time Limit, Doubles, Mixed Martial Art championship bout!
FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!
Right out of the gate Beck has selected the Concealed Dagger, eschewing her traditional Sack of Lutren Currency. A bold opening gambit that has clearly caught Grey Canid #2 wrong footed.
Meanwhile Rook and Grey Canid #1 have engaged in a text-book Crossing-of-Swords, an absolute classic of the swashbuckling school, though here deployed unconventionally early in the fight! Will our duellists choose to resolve with the Double-Handed-Shove, Boot-to-the-Chest, transition into a Growled-Face-to-Face-Exchange-of-Threats or some as yet unforseen tactic?
Rook rolls 2 Swords, 3 Shields and a reflect.
Beck had the ranger cloak equipped a rangers cloak and is currently evading.
The good news is if the sand spiders win the Kingsguard have to leave town and onto an adjacent hex.
I bet Asha’s hiding out somewhere in the background, either waiting to lend a helping paw to the fight, or to secretly get Janik and Mitra out of there while the canid are distracted
I think Asha is still in Nessa due to Tabitha not wanting her to be in the kind of scrap Rook and Beck are in at the moment.
Though she does seem like the kind to go against her adoptive mother’s wishes and sneak away to join the fun.
Use your teeth, Beck! USE YOUR TEETH!!!!
Ah, but that’s going to be her secret weapon! The canid is going to have her pinned, and he’s going to be like, “I have you now!” But when he goes to strike… CHOMP!
I actually didn’t mean to bite – just to frighten. One flash of THIS:

And they should be running for the hills, without a drop of blood spilled!
Since the canid are so obsessed with strength and power, they’d probably see Beck’s fearsome molars as a challenge to their own frightening canines!
The way the axe-wielding canid is over extenting this doesnt bode well for him. Not that these canid have proven to be that bright ^^
Does anyone know how I can enter the Discord server? I know it’s closed off to public entrances right now but would it be possible to get a link at all?
Hi Tiji! Right now we’re only giving Discord invites via rewards in our Kickstarter. We may open them again on a limited basis in the future, but for the moment that’s the only way.
Okay, thanks for letting me know! Keep up the good work.
Okay, FINALLY, i just finished reading every single page of this comic to this point, and now i’m eagerly waiting for more. I’m very impressed with the quality of your work all the way back to your first posts here.
I’m also impressed with myself because i never thought i would read absolutely everything from a webcomic and still not think that it’s enough, i guess that’s what happens when a story is so good!
Congrats for all the hard work put in all of those pages, intermissions, side stories, world-building, and so on and so forth.
Congrats also for the Salmon Party, you made me laugh more than i expected to!
It was a long journey to get to this page, but it was so worth it!
Loving the story and the world. Just completed reading through all of the pages. 1500 USD left to go on the fundraiser. I’m at the edge of my seat.
925 USD!
Goal’s been reached!
I hope to god that there are good wolves in this series like a small army of exiled Canid warriors that are like a ronin tribe and the reason they were banished was because they got pretty fed up of the the bloody war between the canid and the ermithan and wanted peace between the two races but were dined it and took there request as treachery and pushed them out of the canid and so joined withe emathen tribe and established an unbrakable bond tuse and partnership between each other
Why do they have to be separate from the kingdom to be good?
Lol I feel almost exactly the same. Canid race design in Western Deep is my favourite but they are almost always bad + they are usally later dead like I suppose these 2 guys will be soon. Would really appreciate at least one good Canid in story (not counting Cain). I still think they will try reason with Canid king later in story at least.
Well in reality we’ve all seen a handful of ‘bad’ characters who have been driving the story (especially if you read the whole thing up to now in one sitting). Compared to an entire Kingdom, I’d say there’s plenty of good, we just haven’t seen it. I also hope we see some soon.
Yes I understand that, but I was talking purely about this specific comic plot. You can assume few random like in vol.2 garrison were neutral lets say but except that you got all bad canids with exception of Cain who is more like side story char. Clovis, one eye guard, Tosch, sand spiders plot canid assassins, current ones etc. :)
Nonsense, Clovis was a sweet and gentle boy. :P
Still he falls into my category called ‘later dead’ which I have mentioned ;]
