Chapter 3: Page 90
Hello everyone! Before I write any other kind of post, I’d like to submit for your consideration BEYOND THE WESTERN DEEP for this year’s Ringo Awards!
The Ringo Awards are unique in that they accept nominations from both comic fans and professionals both, so I ask that if you’ve been enjoying our webcomic, to please follow this link and let the Ringo Awards know on your ballot!
Please vote! :D
Sigrid’s none too happy about what’s transpiring, and I can’t say I blame her–but on the other hand, look at that cool wax seal! Yeah, that’s just me handwaving a bit. Really I got nothing for Sigrid. Tosch has clearly connected all the threads perfectly in his own mind, and now she’s just along for the ride.
Speaking of rides, have you ever wondered how long it might take to get from place to place in the world of the Western Deep? Rachel and I have always had a rough idea, but it wasn’t until reader 4U2PRO came along that we really began to think too seriously about it. It all started with an off-hand comment I made that the rough distance between Terria and Deltrada in my head equated to something like the distance between Wales and Scotland. Since that distance is pretty definable (486 km or 302 miles), 4U2PRO was able to extrapolate the pixel measurements between locations on our world map to put together this little chart!
Some example distances based on the map are:
Lutra to Terria: 185.08 pixels, or 595.67 kilometers
Lutra to Deltrada: 337.68 pixels, or 1086.84 kilometers
Lutra to Arklow: 338.66 pixels, or 1089.98 kilometers
Terria to Gair: 531.95 pixels, or 1712.11 kilometers
Deltrada to Cenolau: 292.61 pixels, or 941.76 kilometers
Deltrada to Nessa: 423.87 pixels, or 1364.25 kilometers
Cenolau to Nessa: 134.35 pixels, or 432.41 kilometers
Crazy stuff! I love it! Now, the exact distances aren’t quite these precise numbers (though they are indeed accurate based on the map), but I have to say, as a rough approximation, it feels pretty good! Incredible work, 4U2PRO!
And I see the Sealing Wax Chronicles continue.
More great poses and expressions from Sigrid … and that Tosch in the last panel is perhaps the Ultimate Tosch. Not necessarily the most appealing one, but the one that lets his inner Toschness shine forth most brightly and curmudgeonly.
That map has too many lines for my brain – which is more a reflection on me than the efforts of its creator.
Now, vote vote vote, everyone!
“that Tosch in the last panel is perhaps the Ultimate Tosch”
Ultimate Tosch thinks Sigrid should have Refrained From Putting Her HanDS ON HIS DESK!!!
Perhaps Ultimate Tosch will remove her hands in the next page … either from his desk, or from her body.
I was worried before that Tosch would murder Sigrid, now I’m beginning to think Sigrid should start considering her own upward mobility.
What if Tosch had an unfortunate accident in his office?
What if he burned his finger on some molten wax, fell off his chair and landed on a halberd eleven times? It’s more common than you think.
What if he promoted Sigrid to general just before his untimely demise? Merely an unfortunate coincidence.
If it just happens to prevent the entire known world from plunging into an apocalyptic war resulting in incalclable amounts of death, deprivation, terror, suffering and destruction then I suppose we can consider it a silver lining.
Clovis looks wonky in the last panel, like he’s missing the back of his skull.
I mean, having half a brain would explain a LOT about Tosch’s actions…
I grant this post the Salmon Award for Best Comment on this week’s page.
Great page, I really like Sigrid :3
Tosch is dangerous guy, I think his warlike nature and unscrupulous outlook hinder him in seeing a larger picture or considering different options. Also I don’t wonder that the warlike canine consider war as a good solution.
Can’t wait how the story progresses.
I voted! But Oh a map of distances? I can make use of this in my BtWD Fan comic woo! Just gonna snag that real quick.
Now that I think about it, have we actually ever heard anything about the Lutren Queen before? That’ll be interesting.
I think Quin and Dakkan made an impression on Sigrid when they first met during the battle. Especially with the latter getting all squeamish at the sight of blood. It’s most likely why she doesn’t believe that Sunsgrove are the bloodthirsty traitors that Tosch is trying to paint them as. It’ll be interesting to see whether or not the meeting plays a part in later pages.
Or she can just simply think for herself especially with Tosch making some very serious accusations towards Terria (Especially since they have been allies for a while, Terria and Aisling).
All I was saying is that it would be quite nice if Quin/Dakkan were to viewed as more than just fugitives to at least one Canid soldier, if even indirectly.
Also, with their willingness to “retain” a Sunsgrovian diplomatic party for their own means before any of this kicked off, I can’t help but feel that the Canid as a whole have never cared for anyone or anything outside of their own species or agenda, allies or otherwise. Which I don’t blame them for, if it’s true that their claim to Aisling is indeed illegitimate.
Yes that would be nice. Only time will tell. Wonder where they’re up to in their escape.
Well one could easily assume that when we’ve seen nothing but canid military officials. Especially when it’s said that those military officials, the generals, control the king rather than the other way around.
“I’ll take raving paranoid delusions for $1,000, Alex.” ;)
Dude jumps to conclusions harder than Miko in OotS, and that’s quite the accomplishment.
Tosch is a fantastic detective. Why, he should consider leaving the army and becoming a police detective or a private investigator. (Of course, I would bet on the criminals rather than Tosch.)
