Chapter 4: Page 08
Some readers theorized that Quinlan’s daring escape plan called for hiding in the small brook leading east into the forest! No doubt that would work temporarily, but the key word there would be temporarily. No, our intrepid duo needs to find a way around the canid patrols entirely to reach the safety of their kingdom–and with many days left in their journey, that calls for a more robust solution.
The Eastern Deep isn’t a particularly fun place to hang out, as you can no doubt glean from Dakkan’s wonderful facial expression (another winner by Rachel here).
Dakkan’s face is really just screaming BIG NOPE right here, and I love it in all sorts of ways.
We haven’t really gone too in depth on the differences between the Eastern and Western Deep. The forest as a whole is pretty massive as you can tell from the continental map on our “About Dunia” page. Combining both east and west halves actually gets you a landmass comparable with the Desert of Zin or the entire kingdom of Kishar. It’s HUGE.
And as dangerous as the Western Deep can be, there’s a good reason you don’t see any major cities or trade centers in the Eastern Deep.
For guest art this week, I wanted to share this wonderful rendition of Quinlan by JamieDrewIt!
He looks properly equipped and primed for adventure! I love his expression and pose here, and I’m sure he appreciates having a full complement of arrows in his quiver for once instead of the one.
Thank you so much, Jamie!
And remember, if you want to share your Western Deep guest art with the rest of the community, please send it to us via email at hello (at) westerndeep.net.

You mean the “western depth” is something like the “forbidden forest”. Because if so then I have theories. The boys travel through a dark, unfriendly forest, surrounded only by the sound of bugs and wind. In the distance you can hear the howling of wolves that are afraid to enter this land. At a certain point in their journey, the boys are attacked by beasts and a mysterious figure in hoods comes to their aid. Don’t ask where I got it from, I just have a great imagination. That is why I am writing a book inspired by the world beyond the western depth
Ps. The facial expressions are wonderful. I know I shouldn’t, but the Dakkan’s face blew me away. The background and positions also look like in a fantasy or action movie. Well done and thank you on behalf of everyone for this hard work. We really respect and love your work. Thank you for making this comic come true.
Eastern depth. I’m sorry my mistake. Eastern not Western. Really sorry
Well Dak, this story is called “BEYOND the Western Deep” ;)
TITLE DROP…almost
As long as they don’t come across fire swamps or “rodents of unusual sizes”, they should be fine, right?
Allowing that tamians might be considered Rodents Of Unusual Size, running into a bunch of R.O.U.S. might be a good thing for our heroes on the run.
On the other hand tamians are probably considered Rodents Of Not Unusual Size for Dunia (R.O.N.U.S.f.D) so it’s all a matter of perspective.
Theoretically, ermehn are also rodents. Truth?
Actually Ermehn are Mustilids, not Rodents
So that would mean that a Rodent of Unusual Size In Dunia (R.O.U.S.I.D) could be the size of a horse (relatively cause they don’t exist in Dunia, probably), or house or maybe even a treewalker…
That would definitely explain Dak’s expression if that was the case.
I understand. Thank you
The light and shadows of this page are just fantastic! Dakkan’s face just has so much dimension!
I’ve always loved the color palette for BTWD, by the way. Rachel just wields it so effectively…. Beautiful.
