Chapter 4: Page 09
We’re pretty familiar with the treewalkers and some of their closely-related many-legged brethren by now, indeed! But alas, we’ve yet to see what other horrors lurk within the untamed Deep. Brush spiders and fisher worms are very…evocative names–at least that’s the idea.
BUT. Quinlan knows these woods! We haven’t really delved too deep into his scouting adventures (a little bit in the Meridian Trail, but nothing much beyond that) but obviously when you’re a tamian scout, one of your main jobs is to keep safe the various paths of the Deep, and to remove potential dangers before they can encroach on tamian cities like Terria.
Quin’s done a fair bit of adventuring in these dense forests, and it would be fun to explore them someday! Goodness, there just isn’t enough time in the day. Oh hey, speaking of time-related things:

I absolutely love the dynamic of Quin and Dak’s friendship. Especially the way they seem to shift leader positions. Like neither of them ever is permanently the one who is making the decisions. Since Quinlan knows these words he seems to be the one who knows what to do this time. But in Meridian Trail Dak seemed to be the one who knew what to do. I think it’s a good reflection of real friendship how everybody has different strengths.
It starts to make a little fantasy. Sweet. Anyway, be it just me or Dak, he’s gotten more scary lately, and the quin more courageous and confident. As you can see in previous chapters Dak has always been at the front, now it looks like a quin has taken his place.
“BUT!”
I love the way Alex has weaved some of his own speaking/writing mannerisms into this tale. Easy to see which character he most identifies with here.
I like Quin showing leadership, he’s not such a wallflower as he was at the start of the comic. The first shot of him we saw was him hiding from the world, so this is a big contrast to that!
Good point, He does seem to be growing more confident. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Where have we seen treewalkers before?
can’t remember them
They made a sneaky little cameo in the Prologue! https://westerndeep.net/comic/prologue-page-12/
We’ve also mentioned them in some side stories, including the Tesque origin story. There’s also a nice section about them in the extras section of the new Volume 2 Hardcover :)
Thanks! I had been wondering the same thing. I thought those creatures in the prologue might’ve possibly been them but I wasn’t sure at all
