Chapter 4: Page 11
Welcome to the Felnach Highlands, where the mist is nigh ever-present and the rain a regular traveling companion. These beautiful but chilly hills hide plenty of secrets, but none at the moment more relevant to our story than the Sratha-din as they flee pursuers from Deltrada and patrols from the nearby canid capital of Arklow.
If you check out the map, you can intuit the path Hardin and company took out of Deltrada, escaping east across Lake Felnach and landing deep within the mountains on its opposite shores. Too far north and you’re slowed by the hazardous terrain, and too far south you risk being caught by canid patrols–so a middle ground is essential, but not altogether a guarantee of safety either.
The terrain here was (perhaps unsurprisingly) drawn from the gorgeous misty mountain greenery of Scotland. Specific references came from the area around Clachaig Gully, which eagle-eyed readers might recognize as a backdrop across multiple films.
You can almost SEE Bevan and Kenosh hiding amongst the rocks and the mist, keeping a careful eye out for any pursuing canid patrols!
Speaking of Bevan, who makes a reappearance this week along with Kenosh for the first time in quite a while, I wanted to share this really fun piece of 3D artwork that series collaborator Jerome Jacinto made:
OHMYGOSH it’s a cute lil’ 3D Bevan! His proportions and the low-poly look are evocative of late PlayStation 1-era games like Final Fantasy 9, which I absolutely adore. To be clear, by the way, this isn’t for a specific Western Deep-themed project or anything, Jerome just made this model and rig in his spare time as a means to teach himself how to use the Blender suite of 3D modeling and animation tools. The results are VERY cool.

See you all next week!
Yes. My favorite little fur is back. I wonder if Kenosh misses his son and Hardin has reconciled with Rathik.
Wow, this hill looks like a giant hand!
Also it’s nice to see Bevan and Kenosh again.
I’m keen on seeing Kenosh interacting more with Bevan, they have so differing personalities that it’s bound to be fun to watch.
Maybe spending extended period of time with that ermine makes him realize that his own son isn’t *that* bad in comparison…
Is that our boy Bevan I see?
Stupid question but it’s great to see him!
Gotta say Kenosh, that green cloak isn’t enough to cover the bright blue and white of your uniform
EEEEEEEERRRRRRMEEEEEHHNNNNNNNNNSSS!!!!!
Ah, yes Scotland somewhere I’ve never been. But it is supposed to be in my blood. My brother and I want to go someday, maybe see the old family castle. Well if my sister’s research on Ancestry can be believed. She traced all the way to Mary Queen of Scot’s illegitimate brother. It’s actually probably not all that uncommon her dad had thirteen illegitimate kids, and they probably had lots of ancestors too. I’ve been thinking of making a fb group “almost royalty” ;{)
I had a feeling that was inspired by the Highlands of Scotland. And on another note: I’m really interested in this worlds writing system. Is it similar to the alphabet (like Latin or Greek/Cyrillic based alphabets) or is it more photographic like Chinese/Japanese is? If it’s similar to an alphabet are you guys going to make a Latin script to this worlds writing graph? And also, I’ve been wondering, are all the characters/people of this world speak English? Or are what we’re reading here is a translation of what they’re saying in their native tongue into English? Also how the people write their written language, would they change each character slightly depending on what kind of pen their using? (For example: the technological level they’re at is currently in the early middle age, that means they’re probably most likely to be using quills or something similar to quills. They would have a specific way of writing their language using those kinds of pens. But of we were to fast forward (technologically) would they write it differently if they were using something like a pencil or a ballpoint pen?
This is a really interesting point. As far as my opinion is concerned, each breed has its own writing style and each one uses its own language only to speak English so that they can understand each other with other breeds. When it comes to writing style, it seems to me that a spike and a pencil can make a lot of difference to your handwriting.
Being a resident Scot and having passed the Clachaig/Glencoe area many times on the motorbike loaded with camping gear, i can confirm that it is both stunning and often wet and/or misty! Fortunately i always have waterproofs on standby! I hope Felnach isn’t as wet as it is here heh :)
