Chapter 4: Page 62
Before we kick off the post about today’s page, I have a special April 1st announcement for all of you. On April 2nd. That’s why it’s important for me to let you know that YES, this was our April Fools gag from yesterday. Except maybe it isn’t. Except it probably, definitely is.
Think of Western Deep. What do you imagine? Is it intriguing characters and a deep, nuanced world? Anthropomorphic characters going on grand adventures through lush landscapes?
PROBABLY NOT, because you’re thinking “Wow, why haven’t they partnered with a deep dish pizza company to capitalize on the natural “Deep Dish” potential in their name?”
It’s true! We know that we’ve been squandering the crossover potential with Chicago Deep Dish Pizza for years. Hence, we’re now partnered with a mysterious deep dish pizza company that has most likely never read Beyond the Western Deep in any form.
Look, I know it’s an April Fools thing, but dang I could go for some deep dish pizza right now.
ANYWAY, let’s talk about the latest page!
Rook finally reaches his destination–which we’ve seen before! The aviary!
As we’ve talked about (and seen in the comic) several times in the past, the local aviary is your go-to place for sending quick, secure messages over long distances. The families that run them have been in the game for a very long time, and their reputations are spotless–they have to be, to be entrusted with so much valuable information (and the occasional state secret or two).
But now we’re getting to see another side of this system: their relationship with some of the less savory elements of the world of Dunia. Rook’s Sand Spider coin isn’t standard currency, I can guarantee that much. I guess we’ll just have to see where this goes in the next page!
So many beautiful birds!
What if I want to hire an incredibly ugly bird-messenger? Do they offer that? Shoebills? A vulture that just ate intestines?
What if I want the recipient of my message to read it in the full, discomforting glare of a potoo’s big, weird eyes?
What’s the going rate for penguin rentals?
I’d be somewhat surprised if three ragtag thieves and their two mentors were considered a big enough deal to have their own coins minted. Is there more to the sand spiders? *rubs hands together in gleeful anticipation of the next page*
Quando ci vediamo il prossimo capitolo 4 pagina.
Hi all, new reader here.
Real name David from near St Arnaud, Victoria, Australia.
Agree with Dozer – especially since we only see a few of the many species there.
The coin; Sand Spider = Thieves Guild currency?
Incidentally, the avatar (if it shows correctly) is based on the rare striped rabbit of Borneo.
Welcome to the Wonderful World of Comic Discussion, David StripeCoat! Think you might be our first Aussie?
*now wants to see a Bornean striped rabbit character in “BWD”*
Aha! He’s John Wicking it!
