Chapter 4: Page 63
Seems the aviary keeper has some understanding of what Rook’s coin means! As mentioned last week, all aviary keepers in the world of the Western Deep belong to one of several “families” that maintain the network throughout Dunia. While the Sand Spiders are a relatively small organization in the scheme of things, it wasn’t always so–and Theo’s connections in Nessa run deep.
Tokens like these are a rare sight to most throughout Dunia, but that doesn’t necessarily make them rare. These sorts of transactions usually involve characters a bit more “behind the curtain,” so to speak, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures.
And right now? Well, I guess you could say things are desperate.
Work has been continuing apace on the various Western Deep projects I’ve been alluding to in the past several posts. Volume 2’s Comixology release is getting closer to completion, while we continue working on laying the groundwork for future Kickstarter campaigns and beyond.
See you all next week!
*cue MGS ALERT (!) sound*
Now the question is, was Rook able to get far enough away from the aviary before being spotted again by the canid so that they’ll not figure out he sent a message?
I think that’s the bird guy’s desk still in frame behind Rook in the last panel so, unless these canid are reeeeealy not paying attention, I’m going to guess the answer is no.
Well, it has been remarked that the canid can appear to be not very bright. Maybe they’ll think Rook was just running past the aviary, and not out of it? But as long as the bird gets off before they can question the birdkeeper, the message should be delivered.
Well, there’s that mystery laid to rest…partially. I’m sure we’ll be learning more about Theo’s connections–and maybe getting into trouble because of them?
These look like they are the other two canids at page 58. Seems they left their post at the water well. That could mean that our trio was left behind unsupervised! Things are getting interesting.

Yikes in the last panel! I hope Beck’s ready with another flower pot.
Also, looks like Rook can write. How common is literacy in Dunia?
Not just write, but write *quickly*. And compose as well, which is actually a very different skill set. Wonder if the Spiders have some kind of emergency shorthand worked out for situations such as this, so that an important point can be expressed in just a few key words?
Aren’t these the canid that were at the water well a few pages back? Could it mean that they aren’t looking at beck and the diplomat duo anymore?
Remember, there were apparently additional canid hidden by the sandstorm (or by some other means) who shot at our heroes. One can assume there are enough canid to both run after Rook and keep the rest under guard.
Aghh the birds are so adorable! I love the falcon’s beady-eyed determined expression in the 4th panel. How on earth is Rook going to escape this time? I can’t decide whether to be excited for his brilliant escape or to steel myself for his demise…
HOPEFULLY these canid soldiers AREN’T the ones the gang just ran into??? biting my fingernails
Oh, I thought that he’d hire thugs to help him, not send a letter home. The latency of bird delivered mail is pretty severe!
