Chapter 4: Page 87
Dakkan’s finally achieved some semblance of self-control–that’s a pretty big step for him–but of course everyone there is probably wishing he’d achieved it sooner, as his shouting seems to have helped draw some unsavory characters into the glade.
In between pages over the last couple weeks, we’ve been hard at work with our Western Deep-related extracurricular activities as per the usual! Prep for the Volume Three Kickstarter continues, with a kind of “do a page for a week, do Kickstarter/game stuff for a week” schedule that has helped pace things out.
We’re working with Knights of the Light Table on a whole bunch of fun new animations as well–this time around, unlike a 15 second “scene,” we’ve sliced things up into smaller bit and bobs that we can reuse in several fun ways. For example, here’s a shiny new Western Deep logo:
Looks pretty cool, right? We’ve been fixing to get a proper team logo done for a while, and we imagine this kind of setup allows us to switch out characters, have little animated scenes around the “Western Deep” text, etc.
Quin and Dak are just getting started here!
Work on our War of the Western Deep game is going very well, too–lots of new animations are going in, combat is looking pretty sharp, and I’m proud to say that this will be the first official Western Deep initiative to feature voiced characters! That’s right, you’ll finally get to hear what a tamian and felis sound like! I mention those two specifically because the demo scene we’ve built features our brand new tamian protagonist and a felis bandit that looks an awful lot like the scoundrel we saw attacking Quin and Dak in Volume 2…
Anyway, more on that when it’s ready to share! For now, have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Oops, little problem!
“these woods don’t like noise” just said the burly tamian, you didn’t hear him, softskulls!

Hi Pevel! Thanks for reading!
Unfortunately there appears to be a bit of a language barrier here, but I will say that any questions related to the world, history, or deep lore I like to try and answer in the stories themselves these days. When you’re building out a world and telling a long-form story (or, in the case of Western Deep, several long-form stories at once) it always helps to keep the answers to things in-world, so readers don’t need to hunt outside the source material to understand why something is the way it is.
I, for one, can’t wait to see some canids be gulped up by Treewalkers Pac-Man style
Ha! I can almost hear the sound effects.
Boy, this is a pretty embarrassing failure for a bunch of professional scouts on (more or less) their own turf. Especially considering five out of nine here assembled had reason to believe the canid could still be on their scent, figuratively or literally. Guess they were too distracted by other troubles to mention it.
I’m hoping that this is some kind of double bluff and that the next page will zoom out to reveal an even larger ring of tamian soldiers ambushing the canid. In fact the rest of chapter four could just be an endless series of recursive ambushes.
I don’t think there is a double circle of tamian. I think that given the dangerousness of the woods, they favor small patrols, large ones probably attracting Treewalkers more easily.
The rest of the adventure seems quite obvious to me: canids may be good hunters (with better smelling sence that tamian and all), but their usual hunting grounds do not contain giant predators attracted by the sound of their howls. I pity them (not the heroes because they will probably make it out alive).
Afterwards, the point that I can’t guess is what will be the reaction of the wolves to the Tamian scouts: war has been declared but is it already known to the scouts? And then, their enemies have obviously taken some of their own enemies prisoner… that’s probably going to make the proverb lie because they have their orders…^^
I hope that some canids will survive: I don’t like when antagonistic groups (or even an non-antagonistic) are massacred without a few survivors. If they captured one alive, it might give an interesting perspective on the situation (Do the Canid soldiers think the Tamians and others are aggressors who plotted their general’s death? Are they even thinking or just doing their job without thinking ? I’m sure this war is less Manichaean than it seems.)
So much for stealth. SHIT. I suppose it’d be hoping too much for a giant centipede to show up to save them?
I KNEW IT
Tamian scout: these woods don’t like noises
Canids: anyhow I started howling
Distant shouting continues: ‘TELL ME WHERE HE IS!’
Treewalker #1 trying to put baby to sleep: ‘I swear Philip, I’m going to go down there, so help me!
Treewalker #2 reading paper: ‘Now, now, Helen I’m sure they’ll settle down any minute.’
Canid patrol: ‘WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOÖÓÒŌØÕOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo.’
Treewalker baby: *horrifying treewalker noises!*
Treewalker #1: ‘Gosh darn heck!’
Treewalker #2 calmly loading 15 shotguns: ‘Not very neighbourly, I’d say. No siree Bob.’
LOL LOL Perfect! :)
*PFFFT!*
I really want those books.
They’re all available on TopatoCo’s we store, along with other bits of merchandise from our crowdfunding campaigns! https://topatoco.com/collections/westerndeep
Is there a translation planned in French?
Personally I can help with the translation (it’s less hard than translating a novel), but you also have to get in touch with the French editions, I think?
The company of the Deep shall be nine…
