Chapter 4: Page 89
I think on some level we can all relate to Crim’s impossible choice here in one way or another. He wanted to be Captain of the Royal Guard and make the hard choices. In an alternate reality “what if…” scenario, Crim could actually have been in Quinlan’s place, and Quinlan could have been Scout Captain.
I do wonder what Quinlan would do here, far removed in that case from his learnings and development in Deltrada. That’s what makes “what if…” scenarios so much fun!
What ISN’T fun, though, is that Crim probably hadn’t expected to be faced with this level of inter-kingdom intrigue in a job usually focused on clearing out bandits and troublesome critters harassing travelers.
Of course, if Crim refuses to turn anyone over, those canid don’t seem like they’d just pack it up and leave, huh?
I guess we’ll have to wait and find out!
And now it all comes out.
Whatcha gonna do, Crimmy boy?
I thought he was just gonna be a local troublemaker left behind until they came home. Now he’s the crux of a pivotal moment. Once again, this is why Western Deep’s writing is a tier above. Things that seemed unimportant at first come back to add to the plot!
I can see Crim being just stubborn enough to not back down. Some rando canid soldier shows up and starts giving orders like the chain of command means nothing? And then starts making threats, as if a handful of canid could manage to wipe out Crim’s whole scouting party, in the Deep, with nobody escaping to report Aisling’s attack on Sunsgrovian sovereignty? And Crim’s just supposed to roll over and take that? No way.
Honestly, if tables were turned I think Quinlan would give in. He’s just too meek to stand up against strong a willed person, unlike Crim.
I disagree. I think Quin would do what Crim still might: appear to give in to avoid an immediate massacre, then rally to harass the retreating canid from the tress and effect a rescue on tamian terms.
Or, the treewalkers show up. Wotever.
*from the trees*
Nah I don’t think Quinn has developed enough as a leader to think so tactfully as you suggested. BTW what are tree walkers? Do ya’ll know what they look like?
Imagine, if you will, a centipede the size of a three car train. An angry, hungry train.
I LOVE how Rhosyn is being a total sis and advocating for Quin and Dakken. She knows she’s probably dead and has absolutely no reason to vouch for them but she’d be damned if she’s gonna let the injustice of them being wrongfully accused of a crime slip by. I’ll be sad if this is her siren song, however. :(
Why Rhosyn is helping dak and quin? Don’t they dislike sunsgrovians for being allies with the canid? Or was this hostility reserved only for kenosh when they first met?
