Chapter 1: Title
Meet Quinlan, our Tamian protagonist! He serves as a scout in the Tamian fighting forces – an eye in the trees, away from any actual battle lines that may be drawn. Even though these duties often include fighting off dangerous Treewalkers in the Deep, the scouts receive little recognition or respect for their efforts. If you were to ask Quin about that, however, he’d probably tell you he prefers it that way.
Which brings us to the scene presented in this title image, in which Quin finds himself not only stuck as the center of attention, but saddled with a slew of new responsibilities that he would rather more capable warriors handle…
Come back this Saturday as we begin Chapter 1 and start to explore the characters that we will be following Beyond the Western Deep!
Interesting that you chose to go a less colourful route for the title page. I suppose it makes a good division and break between plotlines.
I love his reluctant expression, can’t wait for page 1!
You pretty much nailed it. The idea behind the title page style is to be a nice little change from normal. Like you suggested, it makes a nice division and also lets me play around a little with something different. It’s also faster to make, which lets me keep my focus on the real pages. c:
Not to mention an opportunity to to use symbolism and surreal monochromatic mood settings. You used green here, which to me I see both peaceful moments of the first chapter but also his how Quinlan is feeling sick about his new responsibilities. Reds, purples, and blue shading would greatly shift the tone.
You guys have a very nice flow to your comic. I’ve notice in other comics and books, that it can be very jumpy, and go from one thing to another. Great job! Can’t wait for Saturday!
Hee, squirrels. Love this page. In fact, I’ve been consistently impressed with the quality of this comic, and you should know I’ll be buying a copy of this if you guys ever get this published. :3
Seconded.
Thirded! And maybe fourthed as well, depending on whether I buy additional copies for handing out!
I really appreciate the little review blurb, possibly because of how slowly I read.
Also, I really feel for Quinlan due to personal experiences.
A really nice title page that sets the mood for what’s to come. I like the rather abstract background and the uneasy mood on Quinlan’s face. Having it be in green was also appropriate.
I thought how they did the beggining waas FANTASTIC !
So I made my (11 year old) sister read this on my computer. And she changed my username and commented on a few pages, she didn’t change the URL redirect. So now ALL her comments redirect to my tumblr. Uh, thanks for the promo, sis? At least you finally read it.
Haha, we were wondering about that URL thing when we got the comment notifications. Got a smile out of it regardless. Thanks for reading, Rogue!
