Song of the Eastern Sands: Page 13
Oh those Felis locks! Sounds like Asha’s had some trouble with them in the past. The history of locks and lock complexity was a fun little side-step in writing this bit — while it doesn’t necessarily have a direct impact on the storyline, it was interesting to see just how creative older locking systems could be. Older locks (and by old I mean Egypt circa 4,000 years ago!) were made entirely of wood with a series of thin pins acting as tumblers and a large toothbrush-looking key.
It wasn’t really until the late 18th century that the modern lock came into being, courtesy of inventor Robert Barron (who invented the double-acting lever tumbler lock) and Abraham Stansbury in the early 19th century (who invented the double-acting pin tumbler lock).
In the Four Kingdoms, the Felis and Vulpin have a kind of arms race on lock technology — as they do in many different areas of technological advancement. In a world where surveillance and asset protection is limited to how many guards you can post to watch your stuff, a good lock can be the difference between success and poverty. The Felis, of course, seem to be winning the arms race when it comes to complex lock technology. To keep up with their brilliance, an up-and-coming thief would need the latest set of lockpicks (probably designed by the Felis locksmiths who designed the locks in the first place, in case anyone lost their keys). Sometimes it takes more than skill — you need the right tools for the job!
This week, I wanted to share a very fun piece of art from regular guest art contributor Jerijune featuring our main Lutren cast members (Dakkan, Kenosh, and Beck) engaged in an act of pure tomfoolery.
You see, you might remember that quite some time ago, when Sherlock started to gain popularity, a number of internet users realized that juxtaposing Benedict Cumberbatch’s face alongside various otters reveals startlingly similar expressions! Some of them were nigh-indistinguishable from each other. It ultimately turned into a skit on the Graham Norton Show that wound up with Cumberbatch getting a kiss from Johnny Depp. It was… well… it happened, is what I’m saying. This is a real thing that happened. And now Jerijune has taken this meme one delightfully silly step further: Our Lutren cast members imitating Benedict Cumberbatch imitating otters.
It’s like an M.C. Escher painting of sorts: The Perfect Eternal Lutren. I love it, Jerijune! Don’t let my snark fool you — I was laughing out loud at most of these :) Thank you so much for posting this up, and for giving us all a good laugh!
My, Beck got out of her outfit pretty quick. Between panels, in fact.
And great running gag about Felis locks – ’tis titterful!
And … great page all around, including the background info about Ye Olden Lock Technology, and J’s humorous guest art as well. Got my week’s worth yet again!
“Locks: an Arms Race of Vulpin and Felis ingenuity”
^^ that should be the title if there was a documentary made about the whole Felis lock running gag (plus Alex’s explanation about the fierce competition between Felis and Vulpin)
thanks! and as Graham Norton said; “along with great fame comes great fandom. and along great fandoms come weirdos…”
oh, and you can watch Cumberbatch imitate otters here –> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nz0dLHMHOo
Speaking of Benedict Cumberbatch, can we all agree that he would be a great voice for Hardin?
Bendydoodle Cummerbund doesn’t have the intensity or the grit for a role like Hardin’s. I’d rather have someone like Crispin Freeman.
Oh I’m loving this new storyline^^ such loveable rogues =D
though does anyone know when Book two of Westerdeep will be for sale? I was planning to buying both Book1 and 2 in one go because of the long shipping..
A good page to advance the story, with a bit of humor, a fun commentary, and a great piece of guest art yet again! Seems to be the standard for SOTES, and I certainly won’t be complaining.
So Beck was wearing her full adventuring outfit, including (presumably) sharkskin armor, underneath that frilly pink get-up? Knowing what we know about her now, it certainly makes sense.
I do want to know who Rook is talking to in the final panel, because all of the characters in the scene are on either side of him, yet he’s looking right at the reader . . . for some reason . . .
(Oh, and I do like how Tabby appears to be consoling her adopted daughter over her troubles with Felis locks. Mothers can make anything feel better, including an inadequate performance at illegal activities).
Lastly, now that we know that Tabby knows what activities the mustelid trio gets up to on days such as this, I do have to wonder what she defines as “Asha in trouble”, as mentioned on the last page. I would assume that this would mean “Asha caught by the guard”, but we may never be certain.
It’s kinda funny that Asha’s mom would even let her thieve around, despite the fact she worries about her getting in trouble. But on a serious note, DOES Beck’s hood have a feather on top!? Oh that is so ghetto.
Jerijune you make some of the weirdest fan arts I ever seen. Not that is a bad thing mind you, but just lol. I didnt even knew that was a meme going around though!
I was really confused for a second by the third panel. I think it would be better if we saw Beck transitioning from her gettup instead of seemingly teleporting out of it in between panels.
Beck looks so much more comfortable now that she’s out of those gaudy clothes. Thinking about it,it’s actually rather clever to wear something so eyecatching and memorable for a heist. If someone was after her, all they would remember would be that blinding pink
I think we can probably solve that if we show more of the pink costume still on her body as opposed to the one here where it’s just a tiny 5% of it. What do you think?
Yeah, that would help! Although now that I look at it, Beck is pulling down the clothes in the third panel, it’s just that it’s at the bottom and off the panel so I just thought she was still putting down the chest
Finally caught up with this after a break, great palate cleanser from all the DOOM piling up at the end of the last chapter. I don’t know what your future plans are but it’d be cool to see this be a regular thing, when the storytelling allowed for it.
Glad to see that you’ve joined the discussion over here, Ultra! Allow me to welcome you to the Salmon Party.
Welcome to the Salmon Party.
What a crew. I love Rook dusting his hands off in the last panel, and Asha and her felis mom. We still don’t know how this ties into the main plot, though seeing Janik is stationed in Nessa, I could see her becoming involved with this lot in one way or another. Only time will tell.
In the meantime, I hope everyone in the salmon party is doing well. c:
Glad to see you back! Discussion here has been very quiet since a lot of readers seem to be either too busy to join the weekly discussions, or have nothing to say.
Hey! Nice to see you lot again. I myself have been dealing with getting my butt in gear for a second semester and trying not to procrastinate, so reminding myself I ought to comment is a bit an uphill slog. I think the same applies to few other readers as well.
But I’m sure everyone will be back once the threat of death for Our Heroes returns. :p SOTES is relaxing in that you don’t worry about someone being stabbed in the back. Yet.
Partly busy-ness- last semester I was off in the woods and other places not conducive to an internet connection, and this semester I’ve just been slammed with classes. Now to actually get back on track with weekly comments.
Have I mentioned that I really like Felismum yet? This concept of interracial adoption in the world of Dunia is fascinating, and it looks like it went well in this case. I love the way she’s fussing over Asha in the background. I’m assuming Asha chose to keep her tribe markings, even though she’s not really a member anymore. There’s probably an interesting story there.
I’m more convinced Theo is the one in charge here after he’s the one who brings up being late in this panel and I’m not sure how to feel about this. He could end up being an Iroh/Ashtor figure as easily as he ends up a Fagin-esque figure
Seeing Beck with a neutral expression is. Scary. You don’t know what she’s planning.
Has anyone discovered lock bumping yet in your universe?
In a land without insurance, I imagine that a bumped lock could lead to far worse than a denied insurance claim.
