Song of the Eastern Sands: Page 30
Rook and the Canid assassin seem a little less-than-evenly matched — definitely not a good situation to be in! Huge props to Jerome on the panel pacing here, by the way. Multi-character action sequences are very tricky to lay out, as Rachel can attest to for chapter 2’s cast-encompassing battle scene, so the following pages are/will be tough to nail down.
I’ve got some great news for readers that we just learned yesterday — Rachel and I have been accepted to Artist’s Alley this year at New York Comic Con!
The show will run October 6-9, and we’ll be there selling copies of Beyond the Western Deep: Volume 2, new prints, and all the other merch we’ve got! This is the biggest show we’ve ever done, and we’re incredibly excited about it! There are TONS of fantastic artists who apply every year, and we’re honored to be a part of the show.
For guest art this week, I wanted to highlight the final video that Elson Wong spent over a year putting together. It’s a fantastic piece of guest work — Rachel and I would like to personally thank Elson and the entire cast of the video for putting this together. The premiere was a lot of fun, and hopefully this isn’t the last time Elson and this crew visits the world of the Western Deep!
Regardless of how much better the Canid is than Rook, there’s only one of him and four of them.
Great news on the comic con! It’s nice to see this comic’s readership grow and spread to new people. It’s like a virus. Sort of. But much more pleasant.
Ooo! I’ll take note that NYCC happens in the month of October Alex, I’ll be travellin’ to East Coast next year as you already know for the Fall in New England, if you guys happen to be doing it again the followin’ year I’ll definitely swing by! X3
Which reminds me – will Beyond the Western Deep: Volume 2 + extras be made available online right after the Con? Want to get my copy to support ya’ll! Also any chance of getting an edition without that blinding red publisher’s logo that is Action Lab comics? lol
Your most welcome on the production of the movie and for premiere night – it’s definitely one my highlights this year. Now it’s a matter of spreading the story out to others in light of an alternate medium – i.e. comic drama/video format – and so far I’ve been approached by a bunch of people who haven’t even read or known about the series to start following it – that to me makes me happy. ;)
And oh yes, I’ll be sure to revisit BtWD in future – though it’ll have to be when Volumes 3 and 4 come out! lol BtWD: The Movie 2 ~ Mua ha ha ha!! XD I’m also digging Songs of the Eastern Sands, haven’t found a soundtrack or list of songs that is fully consistent with the mood and pacing of the scenes I’ve envisioned in my head. Listened to some of Prince of Persia’s new stuff and it was a little overdramatic and dark. There are some nice pieces to use in Uncharted 3 but it’s lacking that toony/cheery tone I’m looking for in some of the scenes.
Nevertheless I’ll be sure to keep in touch, lovin’ the page (super delighted to see Jerome’s comic and painting skills put to action) as I’m starting to take a liking to Rook – and bugger he’s in a bit of a pickle here! Can’t wait to see how he gets out of this one – perhaps Asha is preppin’ somethin’. X3
Keep up the awesome stuff as always! Fan for life.
Rook’s skills here is based on the traditional Filipino martial arts called “Arnis” , while the Canid used Aikido on him :)
Thanks for the update–it was a very Monday for me at work, and coming home to this was wonderful ^^
I love Rook’s sass! (At least to me), it seems like he doesn’t usually have much to say.
Also, with Asha vaulting over the railing in the first panel, I think we may see her get in on the money-bag swinging action next week. I certainly hope so, anyway!
Lovely action sequences incoming! Although our poor little rogue sea ferret is caught in a bad start at the moment. But I’m sure A. Asha will step in to deliver the Canid a blade that “sings” through the wind B. Rook will deliver a kick to his assailant’s “eastern” region and C. Beck will throw some sharp “sand” powder to his face.
Again, Elson the entire project was nothing short of amazing. I loved every moment of it as it made my mouth smile so damn hard that I actually got minor muscle spams from doing it for too long.
alsoreallygladthatthisgotupdatedeventually :p
Ha ha! Lovely bit of SotES poetry there! :D
And thank you. I’m glad you enjoyed every moment of it. What’s really cool is that there are new people who never heard of the series before are now following it. Hope they’ll join in the Salmon Party. ;)
In the meantime “Songs of the Eastern Sands” is coming along really well. Can’t wait to see how this story ends! I’m diggin’ Rook now… Is he a “badger” Polcan Pirate? O.O
It’s nice to see them more evenly matched. Of course a trained Canid assassin wouldn’t be easily bested by a common thief, even if Rook is experienced.
Well said Fruitso! This is why I love this scene! ^^ It feels more grounded to reality and it creates interesting tension for those rooting for the heroes. Don’t die Rook! ;__;
Love the action sequence here! This might not be the best idea Rook had in mind, but at least it bought the gang some time.
Also, I love how the movie turned out! Great work, Elson!
Good luck at NYCC, Alex and Rachel!
Thanks Jerijune! And furthermore thanks for that piece of feedback you sent over on DA via note. ;)
Asha is gonna try something! Great page, the action flows well here.
I’m assuming Rook means ‘pup’ purely an insult here and isn’t commenting on the Canid’s age.
I really hope no one we like slips on those amber drops.I love the uncertainty of this scene, with the quick swing of advantage from party to party. The Canid martial art looks pretty ruthless and precise. Also I really hope the diplomats are taking this chance to run for it.
