Song of the Eastern Sands: Page 36
Back in the embassy, Beck and Rook seem to have their hands full. The question of just how benevolent a thieving group should be mid-break-in certainly comes to the fore! Not too many tweaks from initial draft to final here, save for a slight orientation shift in the last panel.
This week, I wanted to give a shoutout to a game I’ve been watching for quite a while: Ghost of a Tale (check out the Steam Page here). It’s a third person stealth-adventure RPG that feels like some lost Redwall or Mouse Guard story, pulled from the ether. In actuality, the world and lore present even in this early-access demo version are deeper than most full games I’ve played, and completely unique to this title. If you’re a fan of the world-building we do in the world of Western Deep, you’ll probably really enjoy this game.
Also, similarly to Dust: An Elysian Tail, this game is mostly the work of one man: Lionel Gallat, an ex-Dreamworks animator who worked on films as Prince of Egypt, Road to El Dorado, and Despicable Me. You can tell almost immediately that an expert artist is heading this title when you look at any screenshot or video of the game. The environments, character models, and animations are all brilliant.
This week for guest art, we’ve got some fantabulous crossover art from Jerijune! If you have Netflix, chances are you might be aware of the Voltron reboot that was recently added. It’s really awesome, with fun characters and great animation from Studio Mir (Legend of Korra). Jerijune decided to adapt a wonderful bit from the first episode with some faces more appropriate for this website:
Jerijune is clearly some sort of wizard! I love any and all crossover artwork featuring Western Deep characters — you might recall some classics like crossovers with Pacific Rim and Avatar? Well, this one’s going on the list!
Thank you so much, Jerijune!
Good for you, Beck.
Just look at that poor man. He’s traumatized by the whole thing, but it’s a good thing to know that Beck knows where she morally stands. If I didnt already like her right now, this little scene would’ve done it.
I’m afraid to admit it but I havent been catching up anything Avatar related so it’s surprising to know that particular screen cap came from one of the animators…I should’ve clued in with those facial expressions though lol. Nice work Jerijune as always!
He is not traumatized, he’s just starting to realize these three strrangers that just saved him are not guards and shouldn’t be there.
“Rook help meh”
“No”
“I insist”
Beck isn’t taking no for an answer.
I love how the Spiders all look out for each other. Rook’s concern gets a bit sobering when you recall he’s the most likely of the bunch to have seen first hand what the northern Canid are truly capable of when it comes to the Ermehn.
And Beck is just concerned at the task at hand. I can’t help but feel this is personal for her somehow- she really needs the money, but she’s risking that for some diplomats. Stopping the attack is one thing, first aid is another- and they //still have to escape with the loot. Although I’m more loth to trust Theo after seeing that these are what he considers the “finest Nessian thieves.”
Now that we have a better look, I’m pretty sure that’s a Lutren Diplomat there, not a guard. No word on any local Tamian diplomats, though I somehow doubt Janik’s father is going to make it out of this unscathed.
Having not seen Voltron, I kinda wished you’d tagged spoilers- I’m assuming from Jeri’s pic that the scarred guy kills the guy in red. Rude. :P
Oh boy, I wonder how Theo’s gonna react to this on the debrief after the mission… Anyway, it’s nice to know that the Sand Spiders care. First aid and maybe some therapy after an assassination attempt would do the diplomat some good.
By the way, the fan art was a “draw the squad” thing on Tumblr. I swear I was going to make more but I didn’t have enough time :(
@shield that was from an early part the first episode, so not many spoilers there. Plus the guy in black does have something in common with a certain grumpy Lutren dad– they were both abducted and then mysteriously returned home.
For no won, I’m leaving the humor to zealot
*From now on, curse you typos.
So I’m the “funny guy” in here, huh? The “class clown”?
SWEET! I love it when my reputation precedes me!
But,shield maiden, you are funny, you can make more jokes! We will assume you are always joking, we promise!
These three are such a good ensemble, and it’s so much fun to watch them in action. Hopefully taking care of the surviving guards will earn them enough good will points to make up for the thievery.
