SPOOKY SCARY SKELETONS!
I know, it’s kinda creepy, and I’m sorry about that–but this is definitely the kind of tone Jerome and I in particular wanted to hit for this story. We loved the idea of taking two of our more bumbling comedic characters and throwing them into a location and situation that was completely at odds with their schtick.
Kind of like Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein, but with a lot more gothic horror thrown in.
Also more desiccated vulpin skulls. Pretty sure Abbot and Costello never ran into any of those.
San Diego Comic Con just wrapped up last Sunday and it was quite the incredible experience! Rachel and I did New York Comic Con back in 2016 and up to now, that had been our largest-ever show to table at. San Diego, whether it was because of its different approach to laying out the convention floor, or because Artist Alley tables are only 4 feet long instead of the usual 6 or 8, felt altogether more intense.
The show wasn’t actually what I’d consider a runaway success (San Diego definitely seems geared more towards the Big Two and more well-known brands, in addition to the incredible size of the show floor seemingly lending itself to more passive looking than engaging at the table), but Rachel and I both had a great time and definitely sold some Western Deep stuff, talked to existing fans, and met some new fans to boot–so most of our major convention goals were achieved :)
We’re not sure what convention we’ll be going to next, but we’re going to be focusing for the remainder of the year on production for the Volume 2 Kickstarter. Trust me when I say we’ve got some cool stuff planned for it that I think you’re going to enjoy!
See you all next week!
And now the skeleton is bound to reply: “I really appreciate your calling me a god!”
“Now be a good chap and fetch me some moisturiser.”
Parkour! It looks so cool!
Characters parkouring around the environment has become part of the identity of the Western Deep for me. Was that always part of the plan or did it just sort of happen?
We added it to Cain and Yurk’s stories specifically because Jerome actually does parkour IRL! I thought it made sense for city-dwelling vagrants like C+Y to be able to quickly navigate Nessa, and parkour made the most sense!
I suppose in a city as dense as Nessa it was either parkour or segways…
That looks like some kind of bat creature. Have those been ever mentioned existing in Dunia?
My initial reaction to this page: “Well, that’s not too surprising to find in a ruined city–WHY DOES THAT SKULL HAVE EARS.” And now that I look on a decently-sized screen, that’s a rather mummified-looking head. That’s some good creepy stuff – kudos.
(Also worth noting: I know Yurk’s fur has always been painted like that, but in the last panel it looks like it’s standing on end. It would be a rather appropriate reaction if that were the case.)
You’ve got a point: Why does the skull have ears?
I think the skull still has some skin and stuff on it still. If you look at the mouth area, there are wrinkles, almost like skin. It might still be in the process of rotting.
In the picture of your con stand, is that a lutren riding a shark?
…okayyy
Riding it. Stabbing it. Rendering it’s skin into leather.
An average day for those devil may care shark hunters!
After much scientific analysis I can confirm that that is, indeed, a spooky skeleton.
