The Abyssal Dunes: Page 34
NOT THAT WAY!
This section of the story was, even going back to the prose origins of the tale, inspired by the Uncharted series of games, with their extremely elaborate action set pieces that usually revolved around running around ancient ruins while things collapsed, then jumping onto OTHER things which would then subsequently collapse.
That’s not a hint at anything in the future, by the way. No hints.
Also, can we all get together on the fact that the googly-eyed placeholder sandskimmer Jerome draws is hilariously adorable?
LOOK AT THAT FACE! That’s not the face of a bloodthirsty carnivore! It’s the face of a lil’ guy who just wants to give you a hug!
Last week, we announced our Kickstarter launch date and shared one of the four guest pieces that we’re planning to feature in the brand new extras section of Volume 2’s hardcover version!
This week, I’d like to share a second piece of guest art from the hardcover, this one by Tank Girl colorist Ned Ivory, whose vibrant, vivid style is unlike anything we’ve seen when it comes to guest pinups!
One of my favorite things about Western Deep is that it welcomes an incredibly broad series of interpretations, from traditional illustration to wild graffiti-inspired takes like Ned’s. I love seeing our characters in any art style, as viewed through individual creators’ lenses. It gives them all a life beyond the comic, and I can’t wait to see more artists interpret the world of the Western Deep in their own unique ways.
This piece will be featured in the Volume 2 hardcover extras section, along with Tracy Butler’s piece and two other guest pieces we’ve yet to share! One of them is by Western Deep guest artist Leah Briere, and we’ll be sharing that one next week!
Epic
The pure terror on Yurk’s face in the first panel is awe-inspiring.
And incredibly accurate. Like he wants to save his breath but can’t quite stop screaming.
Even before reading the author’s notes I thought “Looks like they’re going to have to Nathan Drake their way out of this” so consider your visual language successful.
In future pages we can expect Kain and/or Yurk to:
– miss a jump only for the other to reach out and grab their hand at the last possible moment, saving them from falling. This may happen up to three times per
gamechapter.– be unable to climb on anything that isn’t yellow. (Thankfully sandstone is kind of yellow.)
– solve an ancient puzzle mechanism.
– give the other a leg up. This may happen up to eight times per
gamechapter.– be party to the crashing/sinking/derailing/exploding or otherwise destruction of any vehicle they drive/ride/stow away aboard/are in proximity of/look at.
– have an approx 50% chance on unleashing hitherto unknown antediluvian magics.
– have handholds give way without warning. This may happen an unlimited number of times per
gamechapter.He he poor guys [edited]
I know this is a typographical error but it’s also perfect.
(Also, your english is very good, Guardian!)
Oh Thank you!
Boys sorry l not good in English
Hahah no worries :) I changed the wording either way since we seemed to get your original intent!
Very Thank you!
I’m waiting for one of them to say, “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten us into!” (Laurel and Hardy reference) ;)
I don’t know nothing about sandskimmers but, if they’re territorial, perhaps it would be a good idea to try to get them to see one another.
