The Scholar and the Seawal: Page 8
CHOMP! Looks like the lutren still have somebody looking out for them, after all! Or it could just be the polcan ships have a particular look to them from underwater that looks particularly enticing to these giant whale creatures. That’s the nice thing about myth: it supplies answers to questions without necessarily answering them.
The narration here is a distillation of the standard structure and reasoning behind mythology, which the felis scholars in particular would ascribe to in rationalizing how mythology fits into their view of the world. All myths exist for a reason, all myths try to answer questions, and all myths adhere to some form of storytelling. They’re not just rote fact, there’s a cause and effect, an arc. It’s why long after the questions myths may have posed were answered by science that we still tell them and share them.
And why I wanted to write about them in this Beyond the Western Deep side story :)
Also, I just adore the variety of O_O expressions on the crew’s face at the top of the page. Jayelle really did a marvelous job there. Also also, the Moby Dick-inspired Seawal attack on the polcan ship is perfectly awesome and adds another giant scary creature into the pantheon of giant scary creatures inhabiting Dunia!
And remember, if you have any Western Deep-related artwork you’d like to share with the community, send it over to us at THEWESTERNDEEP(at)GMAIL(dot)COM! (Don’t forget the “the”!)
See you all next week!
Man, whales are really big and scary on this world.
Agree about the first panel. Great roster of poses and expressions there!
And, who was it in last week’s Salmon Party who predicted we’d be seeing the Seawal any time now? To them I cede a cookie.
CALLED IT! :D
When I said that it was not the Polcan, I wasn’t expecting THIS!
Wow. Not the kind of giant sea creature that only eats krill, then.
Rest in Peace, indeterminate number of (probably) Polcan, I guess. One day we may learn what you were running from.
Well captain, you have now seen “something like that”. Not sure that’s exactly a good thing mind you.
Well, that answers that question
Next sidestory chapter: the adventures of the Polcan crew into the belly of the beast.
Maybe they’ll meet Geppetto there? And if our heroes were to get scoffed too, Geppetto and Hekkit could stand around comparing moustaches. (Not to mention double consonants.)
When i saw this page I had the same expression as the Lutren girl standing next to the captain. It also makes me think of that scene from Pirates of the caribbean where the Krakken attacks that merchant ship. I agree with Dozer’s post.
Oh wow. RIP Polcan raiders.
I mean, it was probably Polcan Pirates.
Hopefully it was Polcan Pirates and everyone on board was a dirty queue jumper who deserved to be eaten….
…of course it could have been a hospital ship, Special Polcan Envoy delivering a treaty of everlasting peace to the Lutren or a floating baby goat sanctuary.
And suddenly the Lutren realized that living far up on the top of a mountain was also an option…
Everyone’s probably thinking, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Nice page. I approve.
