The Scholar and the Seawal: Page 9
And we’re back! That break was just enough time for Isa to collect her thoughts and start writing them down in her tome for further analysis and collection at the Spire.
So, as is sometimes the case, blocking a shot’s composition out can be tricky. There might a pretty solid thumbnail, a tiedown, even inks! But then you look at it and you realize it isn’t quite the way you want it.
The thumbnail and tiedown that Jayelle showed me looked pretty good, but she very quickly decided that she wanted another go at it. Sometimes, you have to draw that “go” very quickly and use shorthand to get the new ideas across, for the interest of time.
I love the idea that Isa is casually drawing/writing her experience but, unnoticed in the background, the entire lutren crew has somehow miraculously morphed into (understandably) shocked stick figures. But no, that was just to give an idea for staging.
I thought it was cool! But very quickly after that, Jayelle had another idea–one that focused more clearly on Isa.
So I thought “okay!” That looks pretty nice. It’s focused, streamlin-
Actually no, one more idea! :)
YES! This was it–a combination of all the ideas before, streamlined and connected into a more cohesive vision. This one featuring Isa’s writing, snippets of her drawings, and the text to help push the story forward. I could tell that by this point, Jayelle was confident that this was the right approach, and I think it turned out for the best.
I cannot argue with any of the above.
Although, I actually would have loved to see some of the other layouts fully finished as well, just to see how they would have turned out.
Either way, splendid choice, and splendid page!
Ha! It’s Isa’s cartoon version of the Scholar and the Seawal title card and she drew the Captain’s spider sences going off.
As happy as Isla is. My first instinct is oh crap their is something bin the water and it eats ships or in other words “First is ate the Polcan and now its gonna eat me”! Either way I enjoyed this and learned a little about thumbnail making on the side. whenever i try to do it for my art i still try to make it look like a finished product only smaller. Oh well, another good page as always, see you all in the comments!
Isa’s love of red continues.
Still, she looks so happy to see the mythical beast. It’s almost as if she got a bag of catnip to go along with her notes.
The Spire of Gair institutes a strict no catnip policy.
Then again Boat Rules are in effect: what happens on the boat stays on the boat.
Well, as they say: a tree of lies starts with a seed of truth.
Or myth, in this case.
Isa is also gonna be absolutely skipping down the ramp when the ship docks as the crew stumble down in a daze.
Mission accomplished! All it took was the death of a dozen or so innocent Polcan… (hey for all we know they could have been merchants just wanting to say “Hi”!)
Judging by the size of their ship, it was a heck of a lot more than a dozen.
Okay, um… Great new page, but… why is Isa taking the horrific deaths of dozens of Polcans right in front of her so cavalierly? I mean, she’s just witnessed an entire ship being devoured by the Seawal and its crew dead or dying, and her first instinct is to smile like a kitten and start writing about the nature of mythology in her book? And keep in mind that she’s not even a hardened sailor who’s fought against Polcans throughout her life but a sheltered scholar who’s presumably never witnessed such things.
It almost comes across like there’s something seriously wrong with her…
It’s not so much that there’s anything wrong with her. I get the feeling she’s expoused this theory many times before and been derided for it every time. And here and now, she can see she was RIGHT! She has WITNESSES! She’s a little over-ecstatic, sure, but now the world knows it’s real! (And she’s not crazy).
Let us remember those Polcans were minutes away from boarding her ship and kill everyone.
Not only was her life saved, but it was saved by the very creature she had sought to prove the existence of.
But maybe you are right that she’s a bit too giddy and lackadaysical about.
After all, it has been previously mentioned that Felis scholars are obsessed with knowledge, to the point that some end up dead while seeking it.
I love the first frame. It practically screams “Heeheeheeheehee!!”
Hey, I noticed the Discord server is down… did I miss something?
