War of the Western Deep Demo Reveal
Hi everyone! Alex here. Just wanted to drop a line to let folks know that we are indeed still kicking! We still update the Twitter/X and BlueSky Western Deep accounts regularly with news, but we know that not everyone follows us there or uses social media, so we decided to post a big new update here to let folks know what’s going on!
The long and short of it is, Rachel and I have been working with a small team of development professionals on War of the Western Deep, an adventure-RPG that takes place alongside the comic story and chronicles the tale of Mirren, one of King Dabheid’s loyal couriers, who is tasked with venturing across the border into Aisling with a letter of grave importance just as the canid declare war on Sunsgrove.
The music is being written by Western Deep mainstay Nolan Markey, and all our character animation is being handled by Knights of the Light Table, the same animation team that’s done all the amazing Kickstarter campaign animation you’ve seen going back to our very first Volume 1 Kickstarter.

The game has been in active development for three years now, and in the last year in particular, things really kicked into high gear. We received a significant amount of funding from Cervidian, as mentioned back in early March, and following the debut of our playable demo at PAX West this past month, we’ve received even more investment to help us cover things like our full voice cast as we push towards a late 2027 release date for the game.
As the demo at PAX was extraordinarily well received, we’re beyond pleased to announce that it is now available for everyone to try out right now on Steam for Windows PCs!
You can download the demo from the Steam store page by following this link.
The comic is of course near and dear to my and Rachel’s hearts, and we’re excited to continue the story as time allows. Without the immediate pressure of a show like PAX, we’ll have a little bit more time to spread around–but the game, with its 2027 release date, actively engaged animation team, and various creative contributors constantly chipping away at the adventure–will be our front-burner item for now.
If you want to stay up to date on our goings-on, we update our social media far more regularly!

I wish you guys the best of luck.
I am a hater and
I wish you the WORST of luck >:3 (nah, one of my oomphies sent me your comic a while ago and I’ve been reading through it, it seems cool! I’ll probably buy your game as it also seems cool =3)
Good luck, guys. Hope it goes great! And I look forward to the return of the comic when time allows.
I mean, if I’m being fully honest, I guess I do find it annoying when a webcomic goes on a years-long hiatus for the sake of a spinoff project (see also: Lackadaisy). Fortunately for everyone, nobody is obligated to decide which projects to work on based on what free entertainment is most convenient for me! Besides, my comic only has one page up after seven years, and my promise to finish page two by the end of this year isn’t looking like it’s going to happen, so I’d be a hypocrite to act like anyone else owe me a comic. This stuff is harder than it looks!
So, sincerely, thanks for all you’ve shared with us.
I’m a reader, not a gamer. I came for the story, got hooked on the story, and check every week for more story. It’s frustrating when creators start something, grab me, and then go in a different direction (looking at you, Der-shing Helmer and Michael Sexton).
That said, I’m 100% with Linebyline: you don’t owe us anything, and it’s exciting to see creative people realize their dreams. If there’s never another comic, I’m grateful for the gifts you’ve shared. Until you say it’s over, I’ll keep checking as long as I’m kicking. Thanks!
Oh. Well. That’s extremely disheartening.
I am glad y’all are chasing dreams, and yet…I came for *this* story, not all the spinoff stuff that, honestly, I don’t really care about. Seeing more angles of the setting and conflict is neat but these aren’t the characters I’ve come to care for, enjoy reading about, etc. Knowing even a little about how game dev works makes me worry ‘when we have time’ simply won’t exist. So I guess I wish all y’all luck, but I’m gonna assume this story is dead until after the game releases.
Just found out about this and the game, really excited now! Got to read when I get a chance. I love all of the team’s work in the other various projects!
