Chapter 4: Page 50
See, isn’t that typical? You’re grabbing some supplies in a small outpost in the middle of the desert, you’re scoping out the cool aviary they’ve got, you’re taking in the sights, you think everything’s going to be fine and that you’re going to be able to just shoot in and out no problem…and then it turns out somebody recognizes you despite your mask?
This has happened to me a couple times since face masks became a regular part of my outgoing wardrobe–somebody will recognize me and then I’ll see them and it’ll take me a bit of time to realize who they are. I’m pretty bad remembering names and faces as it is!
Anyway, this trip through the waystation might be a little more complicated than anyone anticipated!
Except you, right? You probably anticipated that.
For guest art this week, another wonderful piece by reader Shay, who decided to take a new crack at human-ified Western Deep characters! This is a fun little trend going back to some art that Rachel did close to the beginning of the story, but I particularly love seeing other artists take a crack at our cast in human form.
I don’t know what you’re talking about, Quin! I think you and Janik look GREAT! That’s entirely due to Shay’s wonderful interpretations of course.
Thank you so much, Shay! We absolutely love seeing your take on the Western Deep world, and we also love being able to share them with the community at large!
You’ll notice that we switched out some links on the side of the webpage by the way! If you head to our Twitter page, you can @ us with any Western Deep themed artwork you might have that you’d like to share with the readership, or you can email it to us at hello(at)westerndeep(dot)net!
Return of ol’ Eye Liner!
Good pickup on that, Trees!
Love all those wide-eyed expressions in the last panel, along with the general sense throughout the page of folks scurrying to prepare for the coming storm. Another fine page, complications and all!
P.S. Oh, and more great work by Shay too! I’d read/watch a “human-ified” “BWD” if it looked like THAT.
Talking of scurrying, my favourite part is Eye Liner power walking towards “camera” in panel 3 like a pastel social terminator.
It remains to be seen if her “My dear Mitra..” is said with genuine affection or more like a Bond villain might say “My dear Bond”. Judging by the eyebrows it might be the latter.
Agreed on all points. (Lurvs me some classic Bond.)
And “pastel social terminator” has now entered the vernacular.
Back in 2005 I was in South Africa with my family visiting my father’s aunt, uncle and cousins. During that trip we went walking in Tsitsikamma National Park. Here, on this otherwise deserted forest track more than 6,000 miles from home that we chose on a whim we passed an old couple who asked us to take their photograph.
We immediately recognised their accents. Turns out they were from Warrenpoint and knew my grandmother.
We weren’t on the run from political assassins at the time (that I know of) but it goes to show: astronomical coincidences happen all the time.
Good point, although in this case I’d say it was far less astronomical than in your story, because 1. presumably the world of “BWD” has a much smaller population than ours, 2. it all takes place on the same land mass, and 3. the current scene is set in Navran, the vulpin region, and both Mitra and ‘Ol Eye Liner (her official name for now) are vulpin, suggesting this is their home region. So, not as farfetched as it might seem.
Great. This will go down hill VERY fast. :( Of all the wretched hives of scum and villainy to bump into an old friend in………. ;)
