Chapter 4: Page 65
We’re trying something new today by promoting the comic on Reddit’s r/comics and r/webcomics communities! We’re there as “the_western_deep” if you want to give us a follow and/or upvote our comic posts.
We’re behind on the curve here, but while we’re undoubtedly late to the party, let’s just embrace the fact that we did eventually show up. After, uh…ten years.
I guess Tiktok is next, huh? Sorry, I’m old; I was around when Vines were things and the hottest memes dropped on YTMND.
ANYWAY, onto to the page!
While the canid army has quite the long reach and a rather powerful apparatus to enforce its whims on other kingdoms, the truth of the matter is while they’re on foreign soil, they’re still fundamentally controlled by the same laws that govern others in those kingdoms. So while their harsh treatment of the ermehn and their sympathizers is often overlooked by the rank and file guards elsewhere, outright murder of another kingdom’s diplomats on foreign soil would still be considered quite the, uh…war crime.
So while the town guards may turn a blind eye to an arrest for suspicion of murdering four canid soldiers in Cenolau several days before, the Nessian guards would most definitely not condone their extrajudicial execution in the public square.
Of course, the moment they’re out of their territory (or perhaps even out of the public eye) those standards could potentially change, depending on the guards in question. These are pretty dark times in a pretty grim world, so there’s no telling what could happen next…
Oh! As mentioned last week, the RINGO AWARDS are now open and accepting nominations!
If you’ve been enjoying Beyond the Western Deep over the last year in particular, please take a moment to nominate us for the “Best Webcomic” award right here: https://ringoawards.com/
In other update news, we’ll hopefully have some fun news to share in the coming weeks regarding our next Kickstarter campaign (which probably won’t be for a book, but something smaller scale and a little different from the norm) so stay tuned for that!
And of course, for the most up to date info on the comic, keep an eye on our Twitter account at https://twitter.com/thewesterndeep.
Oh, so when the Canid do it, it’s just casualties of war, but when their prey fights back it’s suddenly “murder” huh? Sounds like someone’s view of reality needs needs glasses, haha.
That is the mentality of every superpower that controls the narrative. See USA, Russia, China.
Looks like killing diplomats isn’t on his agenda
Well, not now that he sees others watching anyway.
“We’re at war. That’s how it’s done.”
Wow. I knew the “it’s not murder when we do it” rule was in play, but I didn’t expect them to say it out loud.
As you say, fascists care very little about hypocrisy.
Back when the group were fleeing Cenolau I remember Rook asserting to Janik and Mitra that their Convoy Companions had been murdered but I half assumed that Rook was lying out of necessity so his charges would not feel compelled to go back into the town and rescue them. After all I don’t know how Rook would have any way of knowing what had happened to any of them.
Unfortunately the canid officer here doesn’t even try to deny Janik’s accusation so I guess that means Rook’s hunch was right.
Poor old Burly Eye-Patch Lutren, Female Tamian Archer and… eh… other assorted nameless helpers whom we didn’t know at all. Probably your sorry ghosts lie piled within an unmarked desert pit, rite-less, parched and forever lost to heaven. You won’t be avenged and your loved ones back home won’t have the solace of knowing your fate but we of the Salmon Party will remember!
Maybe.
Rest In Peace For Real This Time.
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a Trees post.

I was suspicious about all 4 being killed, but her questioning makes me think that the rogues weren’t responsible for the last canid death.
You never know, that pommel to the skull might’ve unleashed subtle-yet-consequential health problems! Folks just didn’t have access to the same quality medical care as today. But something tells me a Canid soldier would have died from their intense training regime well before a little concussion could do them in.
Poor fella was probably speared by his own commander before waking up. And he wasn’t even the crossbowman what got his own fellow soldier. Yet for as rough as life seems to be for the Canid, their conduct so far leaves a part of me hoping it gets a lot rougher for them in the near future.
